What's new in college admissions and applications this year, 2019-20? ? Over 900 colleges and universities are using the Common Application: ? More than 150 colleges are using the Coalition Application, including CNU, JMU, Tech and William & Mary: ? Some schools will have students self-report SAT or ACT scores in the application. This means you do not need to send official SAT/ACT scores until after you have committed to attending that school (after May 1 of senior year). Look for each college's instructions. Report all your scores and they will look at the sections they need, usually your highest, unless they say to do anything different. ? Some schools are asking for self-reported transcripts, where you need to re-create your transcript (i.e., courses you have taken and the grades within those courses) as part of the application. If they do not require an official transcript, just list the college on your blue senior packet transcript request sheet and say "self-report" in the notes. ? Some schools are using self-reported transcripts AND self-reported test scores. ? Bottom Line: Each college is different and may have different requirements. You must read the directions carefully for each school you are applying to!

Counselor Job Title: School Counselor Here is the GCM info you need in the Grades subsection: Graduating Class Size: 528 Credits & Schedule: we are on a block schedule with year-long classes of 1 credit each. A semester class is 0.5 credits. Some Academy classes are 2 credits. For senior year say courses "In Progress". Class rank reporting: None. FCPS does not rank students. GPA Scale reporting: 4.00 GPA weighting: Weighted. You can find your cumulative GPA on Naviance Student, under the About Me tab. Go to My Account and look under the Academic box. It is also the GPA listed on the bottom of your transcript.

For each college you have listed in your "My Colleges" tab, you will need to complete the Recommenders and FERPA section. Before you can Invite Recommenders, you must complete the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) questions. We recommend you authorize your schools and colleges to release and share records. We highly recommend you select: "I waive my right to review all recommendations and supporting documents." Doing so gives the colleges confidence that you trust your recommenders to write honest assessments. Teachers and colleges pay close attention to how you respond to this question. You do NOT need to wait for a recommender to submit his/her part before you submit your application. Submit yours when you are ready.

After completing the FERPA Release Authorization, Invite your Counselor, Teacher(s) or other Recommenders. Once you've done this with your first school, do the same for every other school on your "My Colleges" list--the "Invite Recommenders" part must be completed

separately for each college you apply to. After you add a recommender one time, you just assign and invite (not add) them to whichever schools you want, except for the counselor, you do not need to assign/invite the counselor each time.

Tips for when you are completing the Coalition Application: If you are applying to one of the following schools, you must complete the Coalition Application, :

? University of Maryland ? University of Washington ? Seattle & Bothell campuses ? Virginia Tech

When completing the Coursework section: Grading Scale: Letter How is the grade for this course reported on your transcript? One final grade (for 911th Grade). Do not report quarter or semester grades if it's a year-long class. Select box for "Uses block scheduling" This course occurred during the: Regular school year Dual Enrollment or NOVA classes: do not say you are a currently enrolled community college or college student seeking credit, just make sure you list the class as "DE". It will say that on your transcript.

Tips for when you are completing Virginia Tech's Coalition Application: ? You can only apply to Virginia Tech using the Coalition Application ? No letters of recommendation will be reviewed ? Self-reported grades and test scores (This should be completed in the Coursework section of the Coalition) ? No secondary choice of major offered ? Early Decision (binding) deadline is Nov. 1 and the Early Action (non-binding) deadline is Dec. 1. ? There are four mandatory short answer questions (120 words max) ? If Virginia Tech is the only school you are applying to using the Coalition, you can skip the following sections in the Coalition application: Coalition Essay, Academic Interests, and Letters of Recommendation. You must complete the Virginia Tech "Ut Prosim" Essays. ? When completing your Coalition Profile, the "Profile Check" should be in the "On" position. This will allow the application to show you areas that need attention.

PLEASE NOTE: GCM will be sending transcripts through a separate system and not through the Coalition, so it is imperative that you report ALL colleges you are applying to on the blue Transcript Release Form, including schools with self-reported transcripts.

By accurately completing the blue Transcript Release Form, the Counselor will know if you are requesting a letter of

recommendation (or not), and this will ensure GCM can send the midyear reports and final transcripts

to the colleges.
