COLLEGE APPLICATION OVERVIEW
California Community Colleges:
• You must be 18 or a high school graduate
• No SAT/ACT required
• Transfer to a four year school upon completion of 54-60 units
• Apply online in spring of senior year
• Take placement tests for math and English and attend orientation spring of senior year
California State University: csumentor.edu
• Apply online Oct.1-Nov. 30 of senior year.
• Admission Index based on “A-G” GPA and SAT or ACT
*Some campuses and some majors are impacted and require more than minimum qualifications
(10-12 GPA x 800)+ SAT Math score + SAT Reading score = > 2900
Or
(10-12 GPA x 200) + (ACT comprehensive score x 10) = > 694
• No essay, or letters of recommendation required with application
• Students self-report all grades on application; official transcripts not required until admission

• Apply online November 1-30; admission notification in March

Private Colleges:
• Many accept the Common Application:
• SAT or ACT usually required;
• SAT Subject Tests may be required, especially at highly selective colleges
• Most require essays, letters of recommendation from counselor and teachers, and official transcript
• Include extracurricular activities and honors/awards
• Many have Early Decision or Early Action option.
• Requirements, selectivity and deadlines can vary widely. Research each college carefully.
Out-of-State Public Colleges :
• SAT Reasoning Test or ACT (with Writing) usually required
• May require essay(s) and a counselor recommendation
• Official transcript is usually required with the application
• Many have rolling admission policies
• Admissions criteria vary widely; check college websites. Some are selective and some admit all who meet the stated minimum requirements.
• Check minimum course requirements; some out-of-state public colleges require a 3rd year of science or a 3rd year of world language for some majors.
Testing
• Students typically take the SAT and/or ACT in spring of junior year and possibly again in fall of senior year.
• For students applying early action or early decision, need to finish all testing by October of senior year.
• Many colleges accept tests dates through December of senior year for regular decision deadline applicants
