Description:
Students will learn the meanings of the prefixes (un-, re-, dis-, pre-, mis-, im-) and be able to identify them in words.
Objective:
Students will discuss prefixes, while creating a chart to help them understand, and identify the meaning of the prefixes with 85% accuracy.
Standards:
ELA5R3 The student understands and acquires new vocabulary and uses it correctly in reading and writing. The student
c. Determines the meaning of unfamiliar words using knowledge of common roots, suffixes, and prefixes.
e. Identifies the meaning of common prefixes (e.g., un-, re-, dis-).
Assessment/Evaluation:
Students will be assessed/evaluated on the accuracy of their chart. They will also have to identify the prefix in any given word. Organization and neatness will be taken into consideration.
Adaptations:
Allow students to work in mixed groups and provide time for students to discuss/share their work.
Materials:
- Computer (go to site jg/66094.html)
- Construction Paper to create the Prefix Cards
- Tape
- Prefixes PowerPoint
- Prefixes Sheet (see below)
- Computer Paper to create the prefix chart
- Markers
Procedures:
1. Watch “Pendemonium: The Italian Job” on . It discusses prefixes, roots, and suffixes in an easy to understand manner.
2. Have students complete the Prefix Sheets (below) as a warm-up (DOL). When students are finished, review the paper with them. Check for understanding.
3. Thirdly watch the PowerPoint on Prefixes:
a. Discuss what each prefix means by putting up the pre-made prefix cards on the board. While discussing the prefixes, allow students to help with the definition and example.
4. Next, pass out the computer paper and instruct students on how to fold the paper so it has a total of 12 boxes. Label the top two boxes with the header “Prefix: beginning of a word”. Label the next ten boxes with the prefixes listed below. Have students write the prefix, meaning, and an example.
5. Lastly, complete the activity/online game at the end of the PowerPoint.
6. When students finish the PowerPoint activity, allow them to go online and play a prefix game at jg/66094.html.
