JOB TITLE: Community Engagement Facilitator

LOCATION: Home-based, with travel across Bristol and to the Penny Brohn UK National Centre in Pill

DATE PREPARED: November 2018

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB: To support the project lead to actively engage people affected by cancer by developing relationships and active participation from diverse communities across Bristol in order to fully understand the needs of those communities and ensure that Penny Brohn services are designed and implemented and of specific benefit and relevance to them.

To support culturally appropriate activities emerging from communities themselves that support people affected by cancer.

CRITICAL DIMENSIONS: No direct reports

FINANCIAL DIMENSIONS: Responsibility to manage small amounts of enablement budget

RESPONSIBLE TO: Community Engagement Project Lead

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. To work with the project lead in order to facilitate the co-production of new community based support. To influence service redesign by involving people affected by cancer and the Penny Brohn UK services team.

2. To support the Project Lead in the development of the organisation’s community engagement framework.

3. To identify, connect and engage with a wide network of people affected by cancer which will inform both Penny Brohn UK in the development and improvement of services and influence local services and influencers so that they become more receptive to the voice of people with cancer and their carers. This may require the post holder to identify and link with local cancer support groups and networks that already exist.

4. To facilitate networks and groups of people affected by cancer, identify unmet needs, collate issues, address areas of possible conflict, write reports and provide detailed information and opportunities into the Services team. Solutions may include co-producing and supporting community development or social enterprise approaches.

5. With the project lead establish a local stakeholder support group and provide ongoing support to the group. Work closely with Research and Evaluation to support their action research process to identify improvements and ongoing learning.

6. Advocate and influence locally on behalf of people affected by cancer in relation to patient and carer experiences, including dignity and respect (e.g. value-based standards work).

7. To support the project lead in the planning, delivery and evaluation of community networking and outreach events and facilitate conversations around cancer and co-production of potential solutions. Small enabling grants can be accessed.

8. To keep and maintain records in line with organisational requirements.

9. To support the project lead in the gathering of evidence and production of reports to influence campaigns and policy development by working collaboratively with colleagues across the UK.

10. To work as an effective member of the Services team, and to work collaboratively across Penny Brohn UK to achieve organisational objectives. To communicate effectively with colleagues within the wider organisation.

11. To adhere to Penny Brohn UK’s policies, protocols and processes including those for complaints and safeguarding. To assist with ensuring processes remain relevant and fit for purpose.

12. To carry out any other ad hoc duties as and when required.

Person Specification

Skills and Experience - Essential

• Understanding of delivery of health and social care

• Experience of developing and sustaining diverse community partnerships

• Experience of supporting and developing in partnership with clients

Working with groups and volunteers in a community based setting (e.g. co-producing community solutions)

• Experience of supporting the voice of a community to instigate and sustain an improvement in local service provision

• Experience of planning community and networking and outreach events

• Experience of gathering qualitative data and reporting outcomes

• Experience of and comfortable with, working remotely

• Experience of group facilitation

• Excellent communication and listening skills

• Excellent organisation and administration skills

• Good level of IT skills
