AMC NH Chapter Map & Compass Weekend

This weekend long map and compass instruction aims to help participants become expert with Map & Compass. We will teach you about topographic maps and the protractor/orienteering compass and how to use both. Instruction will be in small experiential learning groups of 2 instructors with 8 participants.

You will learn How to:

• Use a map and compass together to get from one point to another.

• Take Field to map and map to field calculations.

• Use the 5 D’s of map reading

• Map description(s)

• Determine distances; elevation gain/loss

• Read details provided on various types of maps

• Determine directions on a map; north, south, east, west, direction of travel, and what direction objects are located in reference to where you are.

• Different designations that appear on a map and what they mean.

• Use a protractor/orienteering compass and about the different parts of an orienteering compass and their proper use.

• Estimate time that it might take to hike a trail vs. doing a bushwhack

• Add or subtract declination when determining a route using a map & compass.

• Orient a map in the field using the compass.

• Determine where you are on a map using a method known as triangulation

• Determine your pace to use in determining distances you may have covered/traveled.

• Take sight bearings.

• Successfully be able to navigate around objects such as a pond, bad area of blow down, swamp, cliff, etc. and stay on your bearing.

• To calculate/take back bearings

• Become proficient at following a bearing through a wooded landscape.

This will be a fun filled weekend learning how to master map and compass use. Other than a few group mini lectures we will do nothing but map and compass work. We will have learning session both in and out of doors. Expect to spend about 6 hours outside on Saturday and 4 or 5 hours on Sunday.
