Deciding to Homeschool

Deciding to homeschool your children is a major decision you make as a family.

Homeschooling is a way of life, a full time job, and is a part of child training.

Both parents should agree on the decision to homeschool. Each parent should full understand the responsibility of the decision to homeschool.

List the reasons and convictions that your family has for homeschooling. Decide why you desire to homeschool. Be firm with your decisions. List the pros and cons of homeschooling. Be as through as you can.

List the major goals that need to be met for your family each school year. This needs to be done for every child in the family. This step will help you to be focused.

The patterns that you develop now in homeschooling will affect your children for the rest of their lives.

Curriculum

There are many types of wonderful curriculum available to homeschool families. The three most popular curriculum companies that WCA utilizes are Accelerated Christian Education (ACE), Alpha and Omega, and Saxon.

Accelerated Christian Education

ACE is a Biblically based curriculum geared toward the individual learning needs of each student. The daily work is broken into small conquerable booklets called PACES. PACES are each between 28-43 pages in length. In the center of each booklet is the final test for that book. This test must be removed before the student may begin. For each academic year twelve PACES must be completed in each subject.

Alpha and Omega

Alpha and Omega is a state of the art, Biblically enriched curriculum. It is broken into individualized booklets called lifepacks. There is a requirement of ten booklets per subject each year.

Saxon

WCA uses Saxon math books. This program was developed by John Saxon a former Air Force officer. These are hardcover textbooks to be completed one per year.

Information on other companies may be obtained in the school office.

Other Curriculum Notes

To ensure a balanced education students must work in each subject, starting with a minimum of four pages per day in each of their subjects. Do not allow them to work on only one subject.

To meet the reading requirement, students will need to read orally at least three times weekly from a reader. The parent/teacher should list goals that need to be met. These goals should include correct rhythm, pausing when needed, and correct word pronunciations.

All curriculums must be paid for in full at the time of pickup.

Score keys are on loan to each family, they should be treated as such and must be returned.

Parents are the only parties permitted to use score keys. At no time is it acceptable for a student to be in possession of keys. Parents will need to sign a parent agreement statement, concerning the proper use of score keys.

No student will be allowed to progress to the next level of education until their present stage is mastered.

Organization in your Homeschool

Where and when to Homeschool

There needs to be a designated place in your home set up as your family’s school room. This will relay the importance of education and provide a clean and clear place to do daily work.

You as the parent and educator should decide when school hours will be held in your home. Remember that homeschooling can be as unique as your family is. Tailor your hours and days to meet the needs of your family. When your hours are established, be very consistent in maintaining them.

Your student’s education is in your hands, they will realize that this is important to you by example. Maintain a structured atmosphere.

If your family/student is inactive for three months your family will be considered inactive. There is a $50.00 activation fee to bring your family back into good standing.

Lesson Planning/Record Keeping

A grade/percentage book will need to be purchased and a daily planner.

You must plan and record daily lesson plans.

If you are using a traditional curriculum, you must give a percentage grade for each page, quiz, and test completed. These percentages should be recorded in your record book daily. Daily work, quiz, and test grades must be averaged together for report cards to be issued. Notate needed information on report cards work sheets available in the office.

If you are using the ACE curriculum, record pace numbers, and test scores on the PACE tally sheet. When completed this sheet returns to the office and is converted into a report card. (PACE tally sheets are available in the office and online. They may be reproduced.)
