The online course materials will assist the student in developing the skills necessary to work as a technician in the field of IT. The specific skills covered in each chapter are described at the start of each chapter. Students who complete the reading and activities in all 14 modules including all exams will be prepared to take the CompTIA A+ certification exam. Some labs are instructor-made, not part of the official curriculum, but the goal is for you to JOB READY along with being able to pass the CompTia 901 and 902 exams.Prerequisites: CIS105 or permission of the instructor.Learning Objectives:Upon completion of the IT Essentials v6.0 course, students will be able to perform the following tasks: select the appropriate computer components to build, repair, or upgrade personal computersexplain how to correctly use tools and safely work in a labinstall components to build, repair, or upgrade personal computers explain how to perform preventive maintenance and troubleshooting on personal computersinstall Windows operation systemsperform management and maintenance of Windows operating systemsconfigure computers to communicate on a networkconfigure devices to connect to the Internet and Cloud servicesexplain how to use, configure, and manage laptops and mobile devicesexplain how to configure, secure and troubleshoot mobile, OS X, and Linux operating systemsinstall and share a printer to meet requirementsimplement basic host, data, and network security explain the roles and responsibilities of the IT professionaltroubleshoot advanced hardware and software problemsStudent Responsibilities:You can expect to spend about 6 to 10 hours per week outside of class on homework, reading assignments, taking exams, and reviewing materials via the Internet. You should attend all class meetings and seek clarification to understand the concepts presented by completing all the course chapters, asking questions, participating in class discussions and activities, and utilizing available resources. Participation and completion of all labs is required and will be done in teams during the learning of the first 8 modules during class time. Each student is still independently responsible for his/her own labs and lab submission. Lab rules will be strictly adhered to for the safety of the student and to prevent damage to the equipment. Although most labs are done in class with a teammate, some labs may have to be done outside of class when class time does not permit the inclusion of those labs. When moving to Modules 914, each student will have his/her own lab machine. You are free to use the computer lab in the building common area for homework if you do not have access to a personal computer.Absolutely no drinks or food are allowed near computers. You may store drinks and snacks in the back of the room. Audio tape recording is allowed as an accommodation as long as it’s not disruptive.Attendance:Due to the nature of this course, attendance at all class meetings is required and will directly affect your grade. Attendance records will be maintained. If you are late to class or must leave early, it is your responsibility to make sure you are marked present for that date and obtain lecture notes/handouts! Classes begin promptly at the scheduled time. Breaks will be scheduled and classes will resume promptly after the break. If a situation arises where you cannot attend class, it is your responsibility to contact me regarding any makeup work. The instructor may withdraw a student from class who has accumulated unofficial absences in excess of 20% of the total time the class meets. Official absences are defined as those in which you are involved in an official activity of the college or could also mean prior approval obtained from the instructor.Grading:A large percentage of this course is computer-based training and therefore attendance and completion of all chapters is the key to obtaining a good grade. There will be labs/activities, various assignments, assessment exams, and both an online final exam and an in-class skills-based final exam. Missed chapter exams, if reactivated, will be for half credit BECAUSE IT IS IMPORTANT TO MEET DEADLINES! Lab submissions turned in beyond the due date will be accepted for half credit.YOU MUST PASS THE CHAPTER 1-8 CHECKPOINT EXAM WITH AN UNWEIGHTED SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER IN ORDER TO GET BETTER THAN A ‘C’ IN THE CLASS REGARDLESS OF YOUR OVERALL POINTS IN THE CLASS!!Grading Component Description:Attendance/Class participation 80 (16 classes X 5 points each)Lab/Worksheet Completion100 (Lab Submission 1, 40 points; Lab Submission 2, 60 points.Chapter Exams120 (Exams—8 exams, 15 points each)Hands-On Skills-Based Final Exam100Final Exam (Checkpoint 1-8 Exam)100A = 450 - 500B = 400 - 449C = 350 - 399D = 300 - 349F = below 300Attendance/Class participation is based on being in class the ENTIRE time and how well you participate with your team and are involved in class activities. Even though you work on labs in teams, you are fully responsible for understanding the concepts presented in each lab, with or without a partner. Be sure you participate fully with your teammate. I also expect that you will not use your cell phone in class. It should be stored securely. Personal conversations also should be kept to a minimum. Please contact me if you will not be in class or will be late. Messages can be sent via e-mail or left at my message phone. I would appreciate this courtesy.Lab Activities are to be done in teams when covering the first 8 modules, generally in class and each student is responsible for their own lab submission. The goal is to complete each lab successfully and COMPLETELY even without a partner! In order to get FULL POINTS for lab submissions, you must complete all activities that are assigned. The syllabus lists what needs to be done each week. Some labs are additional to what is included in the lab manual.Chapter Exams are taken online via the Cisco Network Academy site (). Exams are scheduled over the course of one week; THEY, generally, WILL NOT BE RE-ENABLED . . . SO PLAN ACCORDINGLY OR YOU WILL GET 0 POINTS FOR EXAMS NOT TAKEN. Exams that ARE re-enabled will only be given half credit. Missing an exam also denies you the opportunity to evaluate your knowledge on a particular topic. Please contact me should there be extenuating circumstances (death in the family, emergency out-of-town trip, etc.) that would cause you to miss taking an exam. However, since the exams are taken online, they can be taken from anywhere! Exams will generally be activated upon the completion of the chapter lecture. Check the syllabus for exam due dates. It is your responsibility to complete and submit your assignments as indicated and in a timely manner. The points earned (or not earned) are based on your performance.CLASS POLICIES:The curriculum for this course is available online. You can also purchase a book from the bookstore for reading the curriculum. The student lab manual can be purchased from the bookstore or downloaded. Since the lab manual is large, you might want to print individual labs. You will need to print the labs (if necessary) BEFORE COMING TO CLASS if you don’t buy a lab manual or don’t want to submit the labs and worksheets electronically. Or . . . you can open them on a computer in the classroom and work from there to save a “digital” copy. The labs and worksheets can be found in the chapter folders in our LMS. Worksheets are generally to be done as homework and are designed to enhance your learning. Since this course is very intense in terms of requirements, you would be wise to stay on top of weekly assignments.Labs are available in .DOC format in our LMS. If you choose to submit all worksheets and labs electronically, you may put those completed files on a flash drive which will be returned to you after they are copied for me in class or you can e-mail them to me (zipped file). Lab submission sheet must be complete and turned in with labs. Regarding e-mailing labs: There is a limit to the size of files. It is your responsibility to make certain e-mail submissions are not bounced due to size. You can use features also such as Google Drive or Dropbox (or something similar) BUT REMEMBER TO SHARE WITH ME!The reading of each module should be completed before the lecture (check syllabus for that information). This gives you the opportunity to ask clarification type questions during the lecture.Quizzes for each chapter can be found within the curriculum; they prepare you for the Cisco online exams. I would strongly suggest you take the quizzes before taking the online exams. The syllabus is very specific and should be referred to throughout the course; it contains all the information that should answer most of your questions. Refer to it religiously!Professional ethics and academic honesty: Besides academic performance, students should exhibit the qualities of honesty and integrity. Any form of dishonesty, cheating, fabrication, the facilitation of academic dishonesty, and plagiarism may make you subject to disciplinary action. This includes the copying of other student’s data files turned in as your own work. Plagiarizing is a cause for no assignment points. If more than one occurrence a failing grade is given.Cheating: Cheating is not doing the work that you put your name on. A student will not receive any credit; and may be dropped from the course or expelled from the school. No further warnings are issued. The homework lab assignments are NOT group projects, unless specifically clarified by the instructor as a group activity. Labs done in class, of course, will be identical for “teams” and that is expected since you are working with a partner. You must do your own work to receive credit for it. If you give your work using any method to another student, you are also guilty of cheating.Open Lab Times: will be published at the beginning of class. This syllabus/outline may be subject to additions, deletions, and/or changes at the discretion of the instructor or the college district. The course content may vary from this outline to meet the needs of this particular group. Advance notice of such change shall be given.
