Effective Conclusions-Ways to End Your Paper

Make sure that after you have finished presenting the main points of your essay, that you spend time writing the conclusion for your paper (don’t just stop writing!). The final paragraphs of an essay linger longest in the reader’s mind. The conclusion is the payoff to your argument.

What is a conclusion?

Conclusion: The group of sentences or paragraphs that brings an essay to a close. To conclude means not only “to end” but also “to resolve.” Although a conclusion does not resolve all the issues in an essay, the conclusion is the place to show that they have been resolved, an effective conclusion indicates that the writer is committed to what has been expressed, and it is the writer’s last chance to leave an impression of confidence with readers.

A conclusion has three parts: A restatement of thesis, a review, and an impact statement

A conclusion has three goals:

1. to make one last effort to convince the reader

2. to suggest larger implications than you could reasonable assert before you presented your evidence (in other words, implications that logically follow and make sense after you have presented the evidence to support your argument)

3. To provide a satisfying sense of closure (you can use the same techniques that you use for introductions-anecdote, personal experience, comment or reflection on the issues raised, quotation-to provide a sense of finality and closure.

A few general rules to remember for conclusions:

1. Don’t leave the reader suspended in midair, expecting you to go on.

2. Don’t restate everything you’ve already said. In a long, complicated paper, a terse summation of your main points right before your concluding sentences may help your reader grasp your ideas: but a short paper usually requires no summary at all or little more than a single sentence or two.

3. Don’t just re-use your introduction by re-arranging the same phrases.

4. Don’t introduce a brand-new topic that leads away from the point of your essay.

5. Don’t feel that you have to introduce your final paragraph with obvious signal that the end if near. Words and phrases like “In conclusion,” “as I have said,” and “So, as we see” all have their place, but not using them in your conclusion is likely to make a stronger ending and will end your essay more gracefully.

Overall, an effective conclusion reminds your reader what you have just shown them or proven to them why your thesis is important or interesting

Writing Tip: When I read the end of an essay I’ve written, I ask myself “so what?” If my conclusion doesn’t answer the “so what?” question I have not proven the thesis.
