2016 Honored as member to the Center for Migration Studies Board of Trustees
2014 On December 18, 2014 Dr. Omar de la Torre as Chief of the Immigration Policy Unit, announced the decision by the Ministry of the Interior of Mexico with expressed recognition of the Advisory Council of Immigration Policy, the decision to create the Jorge A. Bustamante Annual Award granted to the best research on International Migrations and Human Rights. This decision was made in recognition to the important participation of Dr. Jorge A. Bustamante in developing policies and immigration laws in Mexico and for his intellectual leadership in studies of migration and human rights.
2011 Was appointed by the Mexican Senate as and advisor to the Director of the National Commission of Human Rights of Mexico.
2010 The Mexican Bar Association awarded Prof. Bustamante the National Jurisprudence Award for his work in favor of the human rights of migrants.
2007 Recipient of the Cox-Johnson-Frazier Award, one of the two highest granted to a sociologist in the United States.
2005 Nominated by the Mexican Congress for the Nobel Peace Price.
2005-2006 Appointed for the “Chair Jorge Bustamante”, for the Ph.D. Program on Social Sciences of the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico.

1976 – 1982: U.S.- Mexico border survey on migratory flows from Mexico to the Untied States. Sponsored by the Mexican Ministry of Labor.
1990 - 1995: Quantitative observations at Zapata Canyon. The Use of Photographic Techniques. Sponsored by The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
1988: National identity in Mexico's northern border region: conceptualization and measurement of national identity by sectors of the population in seven border cities, with a comparison with cities in the interior of México, based on systematic random samples of cities’s populations. Sponsored by El Colegio de la Frontera Norte.
The internationalization of local border public administration. Analysis of the international relations between municipal and state governments on both sides of the U.S.-México border, based on a comparison of their legal structures. Sponsored by El Colegio de la Frontera Norte.
The process of economic integration of Mexico-U.S. border cities. An historical perspective. Sponsored by El Colegio de la Frontera Norte.
1978- 1979: International Migration of Mexican Workers. This research project was the most ambitious and comprehensive scientific study ever conducted in Mexico on the migration of Mexican workers to the United States. The research designed was based on a systematic random sample of Mexican migrants’ flows trough the U.S.-Mexico border. Its findings represented the first time that a scientifically based estimate was made of the volume of undocumented immigration to the United States. This study was funded by the Ministry of Labor of Mexico.
1982: National Identity of Mexican Border Populations. An initial survey was conducted in 1982 in several Mexican border cities. Then, it was replicated in cities of the interior of Mexico (south of the border), for comparative purposes. Results on national identity were correlated with the socioeconomic characteristics of the respondents. The initial survey was then replicated in 1984 and 1985. In both instances, findings of the initial survey were confirmed. The results of this study were published in Uso del idioma e identidad nacional as well as in numerous scientific journal articles.
1982: Political Attitudes and Referents among the Populations of Seven Border Cities in Northern México. Interviews were conducted in June 1982 with a random sample of 2600 individuals. Preliminary findings were published under the title Actitudes Políticas de los Fronterizos.
1980: Investigation to determine empirically the feasibility of the creation of a Center for Border Studies. Personal interviews were conducted with social and political leaders of thirteen cities of northern México. This research involved personal interviews and library research. Based on its findings the city of Tijuana was recommended for the Foundation of El Colegio de la Frontera Norte.
1979: Statistical analysis of U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service data on aprehentions of undocumented immigration. In collaboration with Roberto Ham Chande of El Colegio de Mexico. Results were published in the scientific journal Demografia y Economia of El Colegio de Mexico.
1977 - 1981: Library research on undocumented migration in the debates of the United States Congress. This was the initial study that preceded the Programa de Investigación de la Encuesta Nacional de Emigración de la Frontera Norte del País a los Estados Unidos. Sponsored by the Ministry of Labor in Mexico.
1976: Research on U.S. congressional records on the history of Mexican migration in congressional debates between 1915 and 1976. Archival research at the Library of Congress.
1975 - 1976: Personal interviews with randomly selected maquiladora industry workers in various cities along the U.S.-Mexico border, Sponsored by El Colegio de Mexico.
1975 - 1976: Personal interviews with undocumented immigrants detained at INS facilities in Los Angeles, El Paso and Port Isabel, Texas, based on a random selection of individuals. Directed by Julian Samora of the University of Notre Dame.
1973 - 1974: Surveys of the migratory status of families, based on a random selection of households in various cities of southeast Texas (Lower Rio Grande Valley). Directed by Prof. Julian Samora of the University of Notre Dame.
1969- 1971: Participant-observation research, posing as an undocumented immigrant, joining work crews working in various crops (picking citrus, onion, peppers and cotton) in the U.S.-Mexico borders cities of MacAllen, Mission, Elsa, Phar, Edinburg, Harlingen of southeast Texas.
1969: Indepht interviews with 200 household heads in East Chicago. Sponsored by the Ford Foundation and the University of Notre Dame. Directed by Prof. Julian Samora.
1969 -1970: Survey on Mexican Undocumented Immigrants in the Sates of Indiana, Illinois and Michigan (Personal Interviews with 1100 undocumented immigrants). Sponsored by the Ford Foundation and the University of Notre Dame. Directed by Dr. Julian Samora.

Appointed as Associate Director of the Institute of Latino Studies, University of Notre Dame.
The University of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico inaugurated the Chair Jorge A. Bustamante with a key note address by Dr. Rene Franco Barreno on may 18-19, In May of 2006 Prof. Bustamante was awarded by the State Legislator of Chihuahua, México as “exceptional native for his studies on migration”.
2007 Recipient of American Sociological Association’s (ASA) Cox-Johnson-Frazier Award, the ASA’s highest sociologist laureate granted in the United States.
May 16 of 2008. Recognition received from the State Government of Chihuahua, El Colegio de la Frontera Notre and the State Population Council. “For his outstanding contributing of the studies of the northern region of Mexico and his outstanding dedication to the human rights of migrants”.
The Mexican Bar Association awarded Prof. Bustamante the 2010 National Jurisprudence Award for his work in favor of the human rights of migrants.
On December 13, 2011 he was appointed by the Mexican Senate as and advisor to the Director of the National Commission of Human Rights of Mexico.
On December 2016, joined the Board of Trustees to the Center for Migration Studies, in New York City.
