STUDENTS’ ACCOMPLISHMENTS/AWARDS DUE TO TEACHING, ADVISING AND/OR MENTORING

Dr. Denise Carbajal, participant of the Mother-Daughter/Father-Son Program (MDFS), completed PhD in December 2017 from Incarnate Word in San Antonio. She acknowledged the MD Program in her dissertation, at her celebration luncheon and in her graduation announcement in the El Paso Times in December 2017. I direct the MDFS Program.

Dr. Adriana Alvarez, a participant of Project BEEMS (Bilingual Education with an Emphasis in Math and Science), completed her PhD in May 2017 from the University of Colorado, Boulder and was hired by UT Austin as an Assistant Professor, tenure track position. Project BEEMS was a five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education in which teachers completed master’s degrees in Bilingual Education with an emphasis in math and science. I served as PI. I continued to advice, mentor and support Adriana as a graduate student at UTEP and after completing of her master’s degree by writing letters of recommendation for admission to the doctoral program, and providing advice and mentoring through the years. Dissertation Title: Senderos Familiares: Building Fedagogical Pathways to Advance Strength-based Perpectives and Inclusive Family Engagement in Bilingual Classrooms.

Cinthia Meraz Panatoja’s proposal to AERA in collaboration with research team (J. Tinajero, S. Peterson, C. Williams and Rick Myer) was selected for presentation at the 2017 AERA annual conference. The research presented was conducted under my supervision. I provided Ms. Meraz Pantoja with the opportunity to work with me and the research team on the project Examination of Do the Write Thing Challenge Program in El Paso, Texas, a program focused on working with 7th and 8th graders to stop violence such as bullying in our schools. Ms. Meraz Pantoja was required to submit a series of monthly reports to communicate the results of her research project as a COURI and SURPASS scholar. As required of COURI and SURPASS mentors, I reviewed, edited, and approved her monthly reports. As part of the research team, shee participated in activities such as reading and rating essays written by students, designing surveys to collect data, translating surveys into Spanish, conducting data entry and analysis. Ms. Meraz Pantoja was listed as co-author of the paper submitted to AERA and she attended and presented alongside the research team at AERA 2017. The research team is now in the process of completing a manuscript for publication consideration (Do the Write Thing Violence Prevention Program: The Case of a Middle School on the U. S.-Mexico Border). Ms. Meraz Pantoja is one of the co-authors.

Corina Garrison—Ms. Garrison, a graduate student also participated in research with Do the Write Thing El Paso Challenge Program and presented at AERA 2017 along with the research team. She is currently involved in data analysis and will be listed as an author in a manuscript being prepared for publication consideration (Do the Write Thing Violence Prevention Program: The Case of a Middle School on the U. S.-Mexico Border) where I serve as an author together with Dr. S. Peterson, Dr. C. Williams, and Cinthia Meraz Pantoja. 2017.

Cinthia Meraz Pantoja selected as 2016 MERITUS (Mentored Experiences in Research, Inquiry, and Creativity for Undergraduate Scholars) Initiative. Enrolled in RSRC 4033 Research Course under my supervision. Research proposal was submitted and awarded. Cinthia Meraz Pantoja was one of four students featured at the December 2016 Commencement for her accomplishments.

• Chair of the El Paso Do the Write Thing Challenge (a violence prevention program. Over 40 schools in 8 districts in the El Paso area (Canutiillo, Clint, Fabens, El Paso, San Elizario, Tornillo Socorro and Ysleta) participate in this Program. In 2016-2017 academic year, close to 8,000 students submitted essays indicating their commitment to prevent violence. DtWT El Paso is affiliated with the National Campaign to Prevent Violence in Washington, DC. As Chair, I provide leadership to carry out the following major events: Meetings with District Coordinators who work with teachers to carry out activities on violence and violence prevention, writing of essays, submission of essays to UTEP, selection of top 40 essays, working with members of Blue Ribbon Committee (BRC) (judges, lawyers, university faculty and other members of the community) to interview 40 finalists and their parents during Leadership Conference, lead the BRC through the selection of winners and 2 ambassadors who will be announce at the Recognition event at UTEP and subsequently represent El Paso in Washington DC. I also attend the National Recognition event in Washington, DC in the summer. 2012- present.

• Member. Cultivando Valores Committee. Collaborative Project with Consulado de México en El Paso (UTEP, UACJ, EPCC and other agencies on both sides of the border). Major responsibilities include: collecting over 250 samples on values from students in 3-5th grades, analyzing responses, summarizing, and reporting. Assisting in the design of books on Respeto, Honestidad and Justicia. 2016 – present
