2012 Smoky Mountain APIC Speaker Bios

Vicki Brinsko, RN, CIC

Ms. Brinsko is a CIC with Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. She is the author of numerous IC publications and a former member of CDC’s Hospital Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC).

Sandy Garcia, RN, BSN, MBA

Ms. Garcia has over twenty-two years in the healthcare field including surgical services, long term care administration and Chief Nursing Officer. She currently works as a consultant with Joint Commission Resources, Inc.

Thomas E. Haupt, MS, Epidemiologist

Thomas Haupt has published numerous articles and was one of the lead investigators for the Wisconsin Health Department investigation of the Legionnaire’s outbreak associated with a hospital water feature.

Marion Kainer, MD, MPH, FRACP

Dr. Kainer is the Director, Healthcare Associated Infections & Antimicrobial Resistance, at the Tennessee Department of Health. She is a sought after speaker and is an invaluable resource to Infection Preventionists in the state of Tennessee.

Bill Rutala, MPH, PhD, CIC

Dr. Rutala has authored more than 450 publications in the field of infectious diseases, infection control, disinfection & sterilization to include several guidelines (e.g. CDC Guidelines for Disinfection and Sterilization in Healthcare Facilities). He has lectured internationally and has testified before Congress.

Timothy Wiemken, PhD, MPH, CIC

Dr. Wiemken is currently with the University of Louisville/Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences/Division of Infectious Diseases. He presented at the 2011 Smoky Mt. APIC Conference on C-diff and is returning to present his findings on the communication habits of Infection Preventionists in Kentucky and Iowa.
