Lab: Standard scores and percentile scores
1. The mean of a set of scores is 12.0 and the standard deviation is 4.0. Please convert each of the raw scores of 9 and 13 to standard scores. Please convert these same two raw scores to percentile scores.
2. In the population the mean score for a measure of memory function is 17.3 and the standard deviation is 5.0. In the population the mean score for a test of vocabulary is 58 and the standard deviation is 10. A person has a score of 20.3 on the measure of memory function and a score of 63 on the test of vocabulary. Is the person stronger in terms of their memory or their vocabulary? Why do you think so?
3. Draw the normal curve and, on the x-axis, label the standard scores ranging from -3 to +3 (you only need to use whole numbers). Please write in the percentile score for each standard score (i.e., -3, -2) just below each standard score.
4. Find the percentile scores that correspond to each of the following standard scores: +1.6, -1.6, 0.0, +2.9, -.53
When answering the questions below, it will be helpful to start by drawing a graph of the normal curve.
5. For a normally distributed set of raw scores, what percentage of scores fall between a z-score of -1.62 and +2.30?
6. For a normally distributed set of raw scores, what percentage ofscores fall between a z-score of +0.83 and a z-score of +2.15?
7. For a normally distributed set of raw scores, what percentage of raw scores fall between a z-score of -.65 and a z-score of -.87?
8. A psychologist is using a questionnaire measure of depression to help in diagnosing clients with depression. The manual for the questionnaire indicates that clients who score in the top 5% on the questionnaire fall in the "clinically depressed" range. The mean of all of the scores on the questionnaire is 22 and the standard deviation of scores on the questionnaire is 5. What is the highest raw score that a client could get on the questionnaire and still not be considered clinically depressed?
9. The top 2% of students in a math class are selected to go into an accelerated math class. The mean grade is 85 and the standard deviation is 5. What is the lowest grade a person could receive and still get into the accelerated math class?
