Observation ReportSamantha Gray Miami University Saturday, November 8, 2014: Saturday Art at Miami University Oxford 8:30-11:00 AMI went to Saturday Art at Miami University in Oxford. I arrived at 8:30 in the morning. There were other students that were going to help out with the class. Before the students arrived the teacher gave us a brief description of what the class would be like and what we could help with. I noticed that the materials were on a separate table than where the students would be sitting. Also there were students work hanging up and a “Welcome to Saturday Art” posted on the overhead. The theme for the lesson was “How do Heroes overcome their challenges?” When it was time for the students to arrive I noticed that the parents had to sign them in and each child put on a name tag. They then went to the table and sat at their seats. Some of the students started working on their journal page that the teacher had already set out. The journal page had a blank word bubble and also a blank space to draw in. Above those spaces was word that said, “Heroes overcome their challenges by…” The students had to draw a hero overcoming a challenge they would face. One of the things I had to help with was go around and see how the kids were doing and if they needed any help. I noticed some of the kids were really excited to draw and knew what they wanted to draw right away. There were also a few students who thought the activity wasn’t fun and use the terms, “Dum and Stupid.” One boy in particular refused to draw anything because he believed heroes didn’t exist. The teacher tried to talk to him, but she didn’t seem too worried about it. I was curious to why the boy was being so hatful towards the assignment so I went over and talked to him. He told me that there are no heroes in the world because no one has done anything for him. To get him to draw something I asked what his interests where. The boy said he liked to play a game called Minecraft and build fifty story houses. I was impressed so I asked if he could draw one of his houses for me. That got him engaged and he was proud to show me the house he made on Minecraft. After the journal assignment the students gather around the teacher and sat on the floor for story time. The teacher read a book and asked questions as she read. Some of the students didn’t seem interested and seemed bored. During story time is when I put materials on the tables. The materials were pencils, colored paper, and a piece of paper that had images on it. Once the teacher was done reading the book she gave the students another assignment. They were to choose one image from a paper that had multiple images on them. They were to draw three of the same images but in different sizes. One image had to be small, another one a medium size and the last one a larger image. They had to trace them on either warm or cool colored paper. Once the students had their images drawn they cut them out and set them aside. The other helpers and I passed out the scissors when the students were ready to use them. The next step for the students was to get a large piece of paper. If they used warm colors to draw their images on, then they had to pick a cool color as the background. Once the students had their background color picked out they had to draw a design on it with oil pastels. This is when the kids got into the project and seemed more excited. I noticed some kids just scribbled on the background and others took their time in designing a background. Once the students had their backgrounds designed they glued their cut out images on their backgrounds and signed them. Some of the students put the images in the middle of the page and some put them on the corners. After they had everything done they left the whole image on the table so their parents could see it when they got picked up. I thought this was a great experience and I learned a lot. It gave me a sense of idea on how I could teach a large group of students and what to do with students who don’t want to participate in the class. ................
