Graduate Seminars:

Graduate Seminar in Communicating Corporate Social Responsibility. Graduate course focusing on the communication processes required for developing, implementing, publicizing, and evaluating corporate social responsibility programs in organizations.

Graduate Seminar in Organizational Communication. Course is a graduate-level seminar focusing on significant areas of research in organizational communication. Includes topics pertaining to the history of the field of organizational communication, theoretical roots, paradigms, and research related to structural approaches, organizational culture, critical theory, power and conflict, socialization, supervisor-subordinate communication, technological influences on communication, and organizational development.

Graduate Seminar in Theories of Public Relations. Graduate course focuses on theories of public relations with focus on implications for communications practices in corporate and other organizations and government agencies.

Graduate Seminar in Communication Theory. Course is a graduate-level class covering the nature of theory and a broad range of communication theories. Includes theories in interpersonal, organizational, mass communication, critical, and intercultural cultural communication.

Graduate Seminar in Communication Strategy and Planning. Course is a graduate-level seminar focusing on the development of communication strategies in conjunction with overall organizational goals, with an emphasis on issues management.

Graduate Seminar in Communication Education & Pedagogy. Course is a graduate-level seminar covering issues related to teaching communication at the college level. Special emphasis is placed on teaching public speaking as well as pedagogy. Topics covered include instructional strategies, course design, assessment, and instructional communication research pertaining to teacher effectiveness, class management, and motivation.

Undergraduate Courses:

Communication Approaches to Corporate Social Responsibility. Undergraduate course provides an introduction to corporate social responsibility and emphasizes the obligations of organizations to society, the value of stakeholder engagement in the CSR process, developing and implementing initiatives, communicating about CSR, and evaluating the effects of CSR initiatives.

Public Relations Case Studies. Discussion and analysis of public relations cases. Highlights the application of PR theory and research to current and classic case studies. Emphasizes the role of effective public relations in advancing organizational goals.

Mass Media Research Methods. Theory and methods of qualitative and quantitative research. Taught in a large lecture setting.

Advanced Organizational Communication. Course is advanced (junior-senior level) and builds upon introductory concepts in organizational communication. Topics covered include culture, motivation, emotion, organizational identity, globalization, organizational participation and democracy, and organizational change and development.

Introduction to Organizational Communication. Course introduces fundamental theories, concepts, and research related to communicative behavior in organizational settings. Includes topics related to general approaches to understanding internal organizational communication such as classic and contemporary theories of organizing, decision-making, workplace technologies, power, conflict, interpersonal relationships, and ethics.

Introduction to Communication Theories. Course surveys communication theories in rhetoric, interpersonal, organizational, intercultural, and mediated contexts.

Introduction to Interpersonal Communication. Course covers characteristics of human communication and the theoretical and practical implications of these characteristics. Topics include theories and principles of interpersonal communication, relational communication, theories, nonverbal communication, and communication competence.

Communication and Aging. Course covers the special communicative relationships, characteristics, and concerns of the elderly population. Includes discussion of communication theories and concepts as they relate to attitudes toward the aged, communication difficulties of the aged, marital and other kin relationships, friendships, retirement, life satisfaction, media use, and caregiver-elderly interaction.

Interviewing: Principles and Practices. A performance-based course including units on theories of interviewing, methods of interview preparation, questioning techniques, and various types of interviews including informational, employment, persuasive, survey, and performance appraisal interviewing.
