We will cover a wide range of topics, including the time value of money, stock and bond valuation, the calculation of cash flows for a project, capital budgeting, the relationship between risk and return, and the cost of capital. By the end of the course you will have been introduced to the basic tools used in analyzing the investment and financing decisions made within firms. Calculatorsand ExcelCalculators and/or Excel will be allowed for all quizzes and tests. A financial calculator that can solve for present value (PV), future value (FV),and internal rate of return (IRR) or a laptop computer with Excel is essential for some problems and is required for this course. My suggestion is that you use Excel, but if you decide to use a financial calculator, I recommend that you use one of the following: HP-12C; HP-10B; or Texas Instruments BAII Plus. QuizzesWe will have a quiz at the start of each of our last four classes (both days – weekends 2 and 3). I have posted ten problems on the class website for each of the following chapters: Chapters 4, 8-9, 5-6, and 10-11. Our quizzes will all come from those problems with one or two minor modifications made to the problem. Each quiz will only be one problem. At the end of weekends one and two, I will tell you which problems are candidates to appear on the next weekend’s quizzes. For example, I will probably tell you at the end of our first Saturday that one of the 10 problems from Chapter 4 will be the quiz problem at the start of class for our second Friday. You will note that on the class website, I have supplied you with the solutions for each quiz problem, written explanations, and recorded videos where I work out each problem for you. Let me encourage you to work together during the week to practice doing these problems. There are no quizzes scheduled for the first weekend of classes..AdditionalProblemsYour textbook has a number of problems at the end of each chapter. I have reviewed these problems, and have listed the ones I think will help you the most on our class website. I have also posted the solutions manual for these problems on the class website. I strongly encourage you to work through these problems before you begin to work on the potential quiz problems. WebsiteIn addition to our Canvas site, I have set up a website at On it, you will find the class notes, solutions to end-of-chapter problems in your text, quiz problems, solutions, and videos, and other other worthwhile information. I strongly encourage you to visit the website regularly to keep up with what’s going on in class. In particular, if you print out the class notes and have them in front of you during our live classes, I think you’ll find it easier to follow what we are doing and you will not have to spend as much time writing everything down. PreparationPrior to the first weekend of classes, please read through chapters 1, 4, and 8 in your text. We will not discuss the material from chapter 1 in class, but it is important foundational material – particularly if you have never taken a finance course before. We will begin our first online class with the material contained in chapter 4.Online IssuesAs I’m sure you will agree, an in-person class in a regular classroom is the preferred way to learn. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond the control of any of us, that won’t be possible for this course. However, based on having taught this class many times in the past, I am convinced that students who really want to learn will be able to learn – whatever the circumstances. I am committed to providing you the opportunity to learn this material online just as well as you would if we were all in the same building together. For your part, this means it is imperative that you come to each class prepared. That means you should already have read the chapters in the text and looked over the class notes that we will be covinging. If possible, it will benefit you if you can be participating in our live class on one screen, and at the same time, have access to Excel on another screen so that you can work through problems with me. When our online class begins, please be in a distraction-free setting that is conducive to learning. I request that each of you have your camera on and your mic muted. You are encouraged to turn your mics on and ask questions whenever you want, but to reduce background noise for the rest of us, please mute your mics when you aren’t speaking. You do not use the “raise-hand” feature. If you have a question, or something to add to the class, feel free to speak up as you would in a regular classroom. I believe (but do not guarantee) that each of our online classes will be recorded. If they are, I will place them either on Canvas or our class webite so that you can use them for review purposes. Required AppGenius Scan is a free app that you can download through the App Store. I’m going to ask that you download it to your smartphone (and get some practice using it) prior to the start of weekend two. Genious Scan will allow you to easily scan (through your phone’s camera) your quiz answers to a PDF file, attach it to an email, and send it to me. This is how you will be taking your quizzes.
