We have an orchestra and a chorus that you can take for a class or a club. There is also a theater and an art museum in there. DOWD GALLERYTour Guide Talking PointsPractical InfoTitle of exhibition, featured artists and show dates on wall behind reception desk (to left as you walk in)The gallery-shows mainly contemporary art in all media.-maintains a permanent collection (works owned by college) of about 500 pieces from the 1100s-present. Two to four changing exhibitions per semester:-temporarily bring in outside work not normally seen in Cortland (not student art)-student art only shown during Student Select show at the end of every year and occasional one-week exhibitions by BFA or senior art students-events/programs for each show: receptions, artist’s and curator’s talks, relevant lectures, workshopsHallway Gallery (walls on both sides of balcony outside gallery)-show mostly current student and alumni work in this spaceOpportunities for student involvementWork study jobs (gallery monitors), volunteers, interns, Art Exhibition Association (student club)Most Important Points!-The gallery is for all students, regardless of field of study.-Visual arts and visual literacy important aspect of a liberal arts education-Welcoming space: student gallery monitors, and director is always available for any questions.-Gallery as a respite:-Quiet and contemplative space, re-set your brain, re-energizes. -Drop in before class for five minutes or stay two hours.-Some students read or study on benches.Library: There are 4 floors to the library, 1st and 2nd are for group work, 3rd is hush tones and 4th floor is silent. There is a phone up there you can use to get some escorted down to a lower level if they are being disruptive. Academic and transition office is in there, this is where you go if you have taken college credits or AP classes in high school to see if they will transfer. USE THIS OFFICE, you don’t want to take a class that you have already taken in high school. This office also coordinates the COR 101 class that every freshman has to take. This is just a one credit class your first semester to get you acclimated to the school. The teaching materials center is also in there. You can go in and use the materials for lesson plans or if you are going to your placement. All the librarians have a specialized area so they will be able to help you find books for research or help direct you in the right way. Bookmark is also in there, you can get coffee or a small snack in there. ****Talk about the meal plan at BISTRO**Student Life Center: The student life center is a $55 million dollar project that just opened last semester. It is important to put emphasis on the fact that this is a student life center. Students will never have to compete with a varsity team to use the gym. Also, even if you want to come here and hang out there are tables and couches for you and your friends to use. It is home to the fitness center, outdoor pursuits and one of the all you can eat dining facilities. In the fitness center we have weight lifting areas and cardio machines up the stairs. There is also a track that is 1/5th of a mile and goes all the way around the building. We have a golf simulator, a spinning room, a mind and body room. We also have basketball courts and volley ball courts set up all the time. There is also a pool in this building with a 30 person hot tub. There is also a rock wall that is free for students to use. You can become a certified bilayer (the person that holds the rope at the bottom while you climb). You can rent a locker for the year for a small fee or you can just use a day lock. We have group exercise and an unlimited pass for those classes are $30 for the semester, some of those classes include, cardio kick boxing, Zumba and body weight classes. If you are a certified instructor you could apply to teach a class. We also have a game room, every TV that is on the way is hooked up to a gaming device and students can come in and plays games and just hang out. We also have a cross fit room. The “jungle gym” in there is the only one in the US we got it shipped in from the UK. Bistro: This is one of 2 all you can eat dining facilities on campus. They call it “mom’s kitchen” because there is always something to eat there. There are TVs above all the stations to show you what is being served and what is in it along with the nutrition facts. We also have an open kitchen that we use for demonstrations. We have guest chefs come in and we also do a throw down between students with judges from all over campus. You have the chance to win big prizes if you participate. Outdoor Pursuits: You can go in there and rent all kinds of stuff for the outdoors, paddle boards, skis, snowboards etc. Some do cost some money to rent but you can rent them for 24 hours with your student ID. SUNY Cortland also has cabins up at Raquette Lake that students and alumni can go and use. Professional Studies: This building is home to fit majors, kinesiology and speech and hearing. If you are not one of those majors you will never have a class in that building.Park Center: This is where the varsity teams practice and play. There is an Olympic sized pool in there and a hockey rink. There is also a gym just for athletes. Neubig: The other all you can eat dining facility. Summit is the bank of choice on campus, its $5 to open an account; we have 4 ATMS on campus, neubig, park center, SLC and old main. You obviously don’t need to have a summit account but it does make things easier. The college store is also in neubig, they have all the Cortland apparel, and they even have dog bones. The most important part of the college store is the pre-packaged books that they offer. You just send in your schedule with your book list and they will box them all up for you and you just go and pick them up at the beginning of the semester. Prices are competitive with chegg and amazon, the college store usually has the best deals. Glass tower: Glass tower is a quad style of living. There are two rooms of two, a mud room and then a bathroom. Everything that you see in the room comes with the room. In glass there are armoire, some of the other dorms have closets it just depends. Once you are moved in it’ your room you can set it up however you want, it’s just a simple work order to get the bed raised or lowered whichever you prefer. Fitzgerald Hall: This is an example of a low rise or a double. There is a boy’s wing and a girl’s wing with an RA on each side. Again, whatever you see in the room comes with the room. Corey Union: Subway, Raquett pizza and dunkin are all down there this is where you would use your dragon dollars. Upstairs is where the Voice office, the information desk and Student government is located. GET INVOLVED.Van Housen: many students can get placed in the day care to do observation hours; Cortland EMTs is a club that you can join to get certified to be an EMT. **See Hall way of help** Education building/Cornish hall: If you are not an education major you will never have a class in this building. SUNY Cortland was named the best education school in the North East public or private and we pride ourselves on that. All of the classrooms are set up the way that they think you will be teaching your class someday. Small round tables in groups. All classrooms are equipped with smart boards and projectors. Bowers: Brand new science building. Three floors, bio, chem and physics. Every Cortland student has to take 2 science classes, an A science and a B science, which just means a science with a lab and a science without a lab. This building is unique because the architects worked with the professors to design their own labs for their needs, it’s tailored to them. Sperry: This is the lecture hall building on campus. The largest lecture hall we have can hold just under 300 students but classes are never that big, in a lecture hall they like to cap it off at 180 students and a regular class size is around 25 students. The lecture halls are used for general education classes that a majority of students take, like Bio 110 and Communications 100. The professor will wear a microphone when he teaches in here and there are 2 projectors so you can see on whatever side you sit on. In these big classes the professor will have a teaching assistant (TA) that will take attendance and help grade assignments THEY NEVER TEACH A CLASS. Also, in these lecture halls for science classes there is a student who is the supplementary instructor, this is a student that has gotten a B or high in the class and is asked back by the professor, and they are retaking the class and then holding study sessions for the class for some extra practice. Moffett: This is the “ology” building, anthropology, archeology are all housed here. This building is going through a 3 stage renovation. There is a museum in there called the Brooks Museum, Professor Brooks traveled all around the world and collected artifacts and every semester they switch out the artifacts for the classes. Old Main: This is the oldest building on campus. SUNY Cortland was once an all-girls education school. Extra info!Dorms: We don’t have just freshman dorms or sophomore dorms. You do have to live on campus for 2 years; many students decide to move off campus their 3rd year but you are guaranteed housing for all 4 years. Every building has these positions: RAs which are the resident assistants there is one on every floor in the towers and then 2 on every floor in the low rises. The RAs are just there to make sure your transition is going smoothly and they will hold programs for your building to get everyone involved. APMs are the academic peer mentors, they are students that will help with registration when the time comes and they also sometimes hold study sessions if a lot of kids in that building are taking the same class. AAs are the administrative assistants, they take care of the mail and office work for the building and lastly there is an RHD, residence hall directors. This is an actual professional job. They are people that oversee the whole building. All of these positions are paid and you get free housing. There is always someone sitting at the desk until 2 am to make sure everything is running smoothly. The only way to get into your building is with your ID card. If you want to go visit someone else in another dorm they will have to come and let you in your ID card does not have that power. All the bathrooms in the towers get cleaned once a week and in the low rises they get cleaned every day. You are allowed to bring a fridge but if you want a microwave in your room you need to rent a micro fridge from Cortland. Its $200 for the year and it comes with insurance. In every building we have a rec lounge with some variation of a pool table or ping pong table. We also have kitchenettes where you can cook if you want. Every building has laundry which is included in your tuition. We have a website called laundry view so you can see how many washers and dryers are available or how much time is left on them. We also have text alerts to tell you when your laundry is done. The meal plan: The meal plan is probably the hardest thing that you’re going to have to explain. Just take it slow and make sure you ask them if they have any questions! So the way the meal plan works is every incoming freshman starts out at the gold level, which means that you have unlimited dining to Neubig and Bistro, the all you can eat facilities, and then you get 250 Dragon Dollars to spend everywhere else, like subway, dunkin doughnuts, dragons den. Any a la carte items will be Dragon Dollars. We also have connections, this is when you add money to your student ID like a credit card and you can use that anywhere on campus and even off campus, places like Applebee’s and Long Island Bagel. Parking: Freshman can have their cars on campus; you just have to park in the furthest lot. It is $65 for the year to park there. Everyone else gets issued a C permit and that’s $120 for the year. Stadium: Baseball fields, softball fields, a track, soccer fields, the stadium was nice enough to get the Jets here for a few summers. Sports: There are 3 levels of sports on campus. Varsity, club and intermural. We are a division 3 school across the board in varsity sports. Varsity is a time commitment, traveling pretty much every weekend while you’re in season. Club sports are less of a time commitment but are still competitive. You practice 2-3 times a week and then play other schools in the surrounding areas. Intramurals is just you and a few friends playing basketball or volleyball just for fun. Broom ball is a huge intramural sport on campus, 2/3rds of our student body sign up for the event every time it comes around. Clubs: We have over 100 activity and academic clubs on campus. Getting involved is going to be the best way to make your time here so much fun. If there isn’t a club that interests you, you just need 7 friends and a faculty member to start a club. Hallway of Help: Counseling center, if you need someone to talk to someone is always in there and available, everything is confidential. Residence life and housing, if you anything goes wrong in your building their office can help you. Career services, they have walk in Wednesdays where you can bring your resume and cover letter and they will look it over for you, they have mock interviews where they tape you and then you can critique yourself and they also have digital dirt dig up, that’s when they try and dig up things about you online just like a future employer will. You can also get a job on or off campus through this office. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE WORK STUDY TO GET A JOB. Blue lights: SUNY Cortland has a blue light system which means wherever you are on campus you should be able to see a blue light. Pick up the phone or push the button and you will be speaking directly to a UPD officer and they will be to you in 60-90 seconds. UPD: University police department, they are NYS trained officers that are in that office 24/7 if you need anything you just go and talk to them. Printing: We don’t have free printing on campus but we have WEPA, .09 for black and white and .35 for a color. Suggest bringing their own printer. ASAP: This is the tutoring center on campus. For every 3 credit hours you are enrolled in, you get one free hour of tutoring so 15 credit hours you get 5 free hours of tutoring a week. Professional tutors for writing, time management and study skills and peer tutors for specific classes. Civic Engagement office: The Institute for Civic Engagement is a campus organization that promotes career development, applied learning and citizenship through volunteering within the community. It is nationally recognized as leadership organization. This co-curricular class can be applied to a wide variety of majors and minors. Through this office students can gain internship experience and scholarships.FAST FACTS!Academics: 67 Majors38 Minors17:1 Student to Faculty ratio28 Student average class size 80% Participation in applied learning 3.3 Average GPAAthletics: 25 Division III Varsity Athletic teams 34 Athletic Club teams54 Athletic Intramural teams 2015 Men’s baseball and Woman’s lacrosse National Champions Student Body:7,000 Students4% out of state 43% to 57% male to female ratioCampus life:18 Residence Halls8 Dinning Facilities 100 Academic and activity clubsIf after reading this packet you still need/want more information, visit Cortland.edu and go on the Virtual Tour! ................
