Beyond Bunsen Burners: Careers in Chemistry

Chemistry seldom makes the top 10 list of glamorous careers. But for people with inquisitive minds who are creative, persistent, interested in solving problems, think independently, work well with details, have keen powers of observation, and follow logical paths of reasoning, chemistry offers challenging and quite fulfilling career opportunities.

Your job is to research one of the following careers related to chemistry.

Analytical chemist

Biochemist Chemical engineer Chemical plant operator

Research scientist—discovery Research scientist—analytical Research scientist—synthetic

Organic chemist Toxicologist Medicinal chemist

Pharmacist Laboratory technician Veterinary science

Computational chemist Environmental chemist Water management

Nuclear chemist Inorganic chemist Doctor

Teacher Cosmetic chemist Food chemist

Forensic chemist Textile & fabrics chemist Pediatric infectious disease

Other of your choice (please ask/tell Mrs. Thompson if you are going to research a career not listed here)

You then must create a brochure over the information you find! As you research your career, keep in mind that you must include the following information: (along with anything else you may find interesting about that career)

1. An informative description of career chosen. (Includes what they do and where they would work.)

2. Identify other career opportunities available in that field of chemistry.

3. Provide an appropriate chart, graph, or table that relates to the career.

4. Identify the areas/concepts of chemistry that are important for the career (ex: solutions, stoichiometry, reactions, nuclear, etc…)

5. Provide information on the educational background one would need to pursue the career. (What major would one need, what college courses and or classes must be taken, is a bachelors, masters, or PhD required, etc….)

6. Include 2-4 pictures or graphics (1 must be from the internet)

7. Cite all references using MLA format. Your pictures or graphics must be cited.

Start first at the following website:

DO NOT use Wikipedia!!! (or anything like it – blogs, wiki answers, etc)

Paraphrase the information. Do not type what you find word for word.

Plagiarism will get you kicked out of college and will get you a 0 on this assignment!

Reference site – ( MLA format

Brochures will be turned in to athompson@lhsd.k12.oh.us via the share button if using doc template and by collaborating if using Lucidpress.

Good Luck!
