Cosmetology students are required to read the Cosmetology Student Handbook each semester. The handbook is publicly accessible, and students are held to the rules and guidelines herein. Cosmetology faculty reserve the right to make additions or deletions to the posted Cosmetology student handbook. The effective date for any changes made will be included in the handbook when it is updated and/or on the CNM website, and/or written or oral announcements. Significant changes will be communicated to students in a fair and timely M STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT: Refer to CNM Student handbook at this URL In the event of a conflict between information contained in the student handbook and the CNM catalog, the catalog takes precedence. Students are responsible to knot the information contained in the CNM catalog, including the Codes & Policies, and Cosmetology Student Handbook.COSMETOLOGY STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCTPROFESSIONALISM and ETIQUETTE in the COSMETOLOGY PROGRAM:Etiquette refers to the forms, manners, ceremonies and conventions that have been agreed upon as acceptable or required in a profession or in a social setting. Etiquette reflects the respect, integrity and commitment important within those professions and societies. When you use proper professional etiquette, you are declaring that you are an enthusiastic participant in the cosmetology profession. If you dismiss etiquette, you are saying that you do not want to belong. To maintain etiquette is vital for successful relationships and retention of clientele in the cosmetology industry.Students in the program are expected to maintain a high level of professionalism in the classroom and in the lab situations, with fellow students, instructors and staff, and models or clients at all times. Failure to maintain professionalism will be considered disruptive to learning; security will be involved, student(s) will be dismissed from class and a report sent to the Dean of Student’s office.DISCIPLINARY ACTIONStaff Role:All cosmetology staff can provide guidance, counseling, referral to counselors, recommended corrective action and recommendation for release from the program. It is the responsibility of each staff member to respect the dignity of each student and ensure that the esteem of each student is not diminished in the eyes of their fellow students.Student role:Each student is expected to work with fellow students as a team and respect and encourage fellow students. Each cosmetology student is expected to participate fully in all instruction and strive to excel. Always come to class with the tools you need to perform services and work on assigned projects. Students that do not come to class prepared may be sent home and accrue an absence. Performing just to meet minimum standards is not acceptable. Students are expected to convey a positive attitude to staff and fellow students. Gossip, critical remarks, chronic complaining, excuses for poor performance, etc. that affect the morale of fellow class members is unacceptable. Just as staff is expected to be role models, students are expected to model the behavior expected of cosmetology professionals pursuing a career as a licensed cosmetologist.Progressive discipline:Our program utilizes a progressive discipline system that is based on immediately correcting deficient behavior at the lowest level possible. The goal is to correct behavior in a manner that results in the immediate return of the student to expected levels and standards of performance, behavior, and conduct.Discipline process:As a first step, all disciplinary incidents will begin with a discussion of the facts with the student. The goal is to ensure that the student and staff member have a clear understanding of the incident. These discussions will identify the deficient or improper behavior, clearly outline and explain the expected behavior, and make clear that the person’s behavior, not the person him/herself, is the issue.Progressive discipline will involve the following incremental disciplinary measures. This is subject to the nature, seriousness, and severity of the act and its potential for harm, injury or death.Verbal ReprimandCautionary letterWritten ReprimandExpulsion from the AcademyCHART OF SANCTIONSClass 1 violationsThe following offenses may result in the immediate release from the program upon approval of the Program Director, Lead Instructor, or Designee.Violation of any sanitary regulationLying/DishonestyStealingCheating Bullying; including cyber bullyingAccessory to or conspiracy to commit a class 1 violationSexual relations on campusSexual, racial or religious harassment Intoxication on campusPossession of alcohol on campusPossession of illegal drugs on campusCriminal actsInsubordinationConduct that would be illegal in accordance with Salon Practicum Extern sites or CNMRacial, Sexual Misconduct in violation of EEO PolicyAccessing and/or downloading illegal or pornographic information on ANY computerFailure to report a Class 1 violationClass 2 ViolationsThe following offenses shall be subject to immediate progressive discipline (multiple violations may result in the immediate release from training upon approval of the Program Director, Lead Instructor, or Designee).Inappropriate behavior in classroom Inappropriate conversations in class Eating in lab classRefusing to work on daily assignments Refusing to service a customer or modelReceiving a service during class without approval Sleeping in classFailure to maintain personal hygieneFailure to complete daily sanitation dutyLeaving campus and taking extensive breaksFailure to come to class without materialsUniform not clean or other dress code violationFailure to maintain clean hair/nails or hygieneExcessive absencesFailure to wear closed toe shoesUse of profanityFailure to complete or turn in assignmentsFailure to maintain issued or lab equipmentFailure to follow directionsUnofficial use of computers and social mediaDisrupting the learning environmentRelease from the programAuthority for release from the program is the sole discretion of the Director. As a first-incident response, on-the-spot release is justified only in the face of incontrovertible evidence or moral turpitude or flawed character. If a student is released from the program for any reason, including disciplinary measures, the student will be advised as to when they may re-enter the program or the term they were dropped from.ConclusionStudents in the Cosmetology program are expected to hold themselves to the highest standard of professionalism at all times and treat everyone they encounter in the Cosmetology lab and classroom with the same respect they would and should be expected to show the public they serve. Instructors and staff will be treated professionally and respectfully. In addition, students are expected to treat each other with that same level of respect at all times. Failure to do so will result in release from the program.ABOUT THE COSMETOLOGY PROGRAMThis handbook is a guide to help you become adjusted to your new learning environment. The regulations outlined are those which are necessary to affect a harmonious relationship among the students, faculty, the participating cosmetology personnel and cosmetology clients.COSMETOLOGY - ASSOCIATE DEGREE OF APPLIED SCIENCEStudents will study basic cosmetology skills designed to meet standards established by the New Mexico State Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists. Student who do not follow these policies will be handled as per the CNM Academic Code of Conduct policies.GRADINGThe following grading policies apply to all theory and lab courses in the program. Theory and lab grades are based on a variety of activities and assignments designated by the faculty. The criteria by which grades for each theory and clinical course are determined are included in course syllabi distributed to students at the beginning of each semester.92-100 = A 82-91 = B 75-81 = C 74-60 = D 60 – 0 = FNew Mexico Board demands 75% or better for a passing grade. An unsatisfactory grade at the completion of a course, theory or lab will result in repetition of classes. An incomplete grad of “I” will be given to a student only when circumstances beyond the student’s control have prevented the student from completing all work by the end of the grading period. A student who receives and “I” as a final grade may not enroll in any class for which the former is a prerequisite. An “I” is converted to a grade upon completion of the missing work. It must be removed by the end of the second week of the following term or it will be permanently recorded as a D or F.Progress reports (grades) may be given periodically during each semester or posted on Bb learn. These grades are not a part of the student’s permanent records. Final grades are issued at the end of each semester and are reflected on the student’s transcript. The faculty strongly endorses the idea that each student is responsible for knowing his/her own academic status based on grades from learning activities. At any time that a student has unsatisfactory averages, he/she should contact the instructor for assistance. Academic Achievement Counseling can be provided for a student who is not progressing satisfactorily in the cosmetology program.FAILURE/WITHDRAWAL/READMISSIONTo progress into the 1st semester of the program, student must receive a grade of “C” or better in Cosmetology coursework in order to progress to the 2nd semester. Students may return to the program and retake the individual 1st semester class or classes the next time they are offered if there is space availability or with the permission of the program chair.A student who withdraws and has a passing average in 1st semester of Cosmetology courses may request readmission at the next 2nd term the courses are offered and will be readmitted on a space available basis.A Student who fails a Cosmetology course in the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th term or is failing a course at the time of withdrawal, may request to be readmitted to the program at the next term the course if offered, and will be readmitted on a space available basis. Each semester must be completed with a passing grade of “C” to advance to next term.GRIEVANCE POLICYStudents may appeal failing final grades for courses based on academic performance of academic dishonesty and may appeal suspension from certain degree programs based on academic performance to appeal a suspension students must contact the department which offers the degree program to see whether a suspension can be or should be appealed in the CNM SCHOOL OF HEALTH WELLNESS & PUBLIC SAFETY.The complete procedure for grievance policy is outlined in the CNM student handbook.CHAIN OF COMMANDThe chain of command in its simplest definition is the line of authority and responsibility for communicating with in the cosmetology program, the lab, the practicum site and classrooms. It is common for students to have concerns about aspects of the cosmetology program or about client concerns. When this occurs, students should discuss these concerns following the chain of command.Academic concerns (examples include but are not limited to faculty issues, educational relationships with cosmetology staff, student peers, etc):First consult with your instructor as a resourceSecond consult with the full-time lead instructor associated with the courseIf situation is not resolved, thirdly consult with the Cosmetology program directorIf no resolution occurs, you may consult your HWPS associate dean or HWPS deanCNM has a formal student complaint process through the Dean of Students office. It is the hope of the cosmetology program that students will follow the chain of command prior to filing a formal complaint. All formal complaints will be addressed.Managing conflict can be highly stressful. If students would like guidance on how to approach an issue or are uncomfortable discussing an issue with a student or faculty (especially if the concern is regarding that person), students are encouraged to set an appointment with the cosmetology program director. The intent of this meeting is not to intervene or solve the problem for the student, but to provide the student with strategies for managing the conflict through the chain of command. The purpose of this step is to provide students with modeling of behaviors that they can use upon entry to the profession.COURSE PROGRESSIONA grade of ‘I’ (incomplete) is given when circumstances beyond the student’s control have prevented completion of the work for a course within the official dates of a term. In no case is an ‘I’ to be used to avoid a failing grade or to allow extra time to compete work normally expected. Please see the CNM Catalog for the full text of this policy.WITHDRAWALS AND FAILURES DEFINEDWithdrawal: When the student chooses to drop enrollment in a required cosmetology course. The cosmetology class would be repeated with co-requisite classes when offered in the next available termCourse failure: When the student achieves a grade of 74% or lower in any Cosmetology class, they would have to repeat the entire term. Classes are co-requisite and designed to be taken together in each term. The student would receive a grade of ‘F’ or need to withdraw from the course. Course failure also would occur in the instance of failing a cosmetology practicum class. In this case, the student would have to repeat fourth term MUNICATIONE-MAILE-mail is a means of communication in the Cosmetology Program. Students are required to access and maintain their CNM e-mail accounts. The CNM e-mail address is the only e-mail address that the school of cosmetology will use to communicate with enrolled students. Students should check their e-mail daily, but absolutely must check their e-mail at least twice a week. While it is possible to forward e-mail from the CNM account to other accounts, it is not recommended because it often results in message failure, which is not considered a valid excuse for missing information. Students are held responsible for the information within the e-mails, whether they read them or not. Students are responsible for contacting the CNM INFORMATION technologies HELP desk via telephone at servicedesk@cnm.edu to resolve any e-mail problems. Instructors will answer e-mails in a timely fashion, but e-mail is not instant messaging. It is reasonable to expect faculty to respond to e-mails with one (1) to two (2) working days. This does not include off duty hours, weekends or holidays. If a student feels than an issue is pressing, he or she is encouraged to indicate urgency in the subject line of that email, but this does not guarantee a faster response.ANNOUNCEMENTS/HANDOUTSStudents are responsible for the content of all classroom announcements and handouts, even if they are absent. Instructor may announce if they are posted on blackboard.SOCIAL MEDIA EXPECTATIONS IN THE COSMETOLOGY LAB AND CLASSROOMSocial networks and internet provide unparalleled opportunities for rapid knowledge exchange and dissemination among many people, but this exchange does not come without consequences and risk.Cosmetologists and cosmetology students have an obligation to understand the nature, benefits, and consequences of participating in social networking of all types. Online content and behavior have the potential to enhance or undermine not only the individual cosmetology career, but also the cosmetology profession. Tips to Avoid Problems with Social Networking:Remember that standards of professionalism are the same online as in any other circumstance.Do not share or post information or photos gained through the cosmetologist-client relationship.Maintain professional boundaries in the use of electronic media. Online contact with patients blurs this boundary.Do not ever make disparaging or hurtful remarks about clients, extern/practicum sites, employers or co-workers or fellow students, even if they are not identified.Do not take photos or videos of clients on personal devices, including cell phones with the exception of asking to have their permission to take photos of finished work for their portfolios of hair/skin/ or nails. Always ask the client’s permission.Promptly report a breach of confidentiality or privacy. This information should be reported to a full-time faculty or the program director.CELL PHONE/ELECTRICAL DEVICE POLICYStudents have the right to uninterrupted classroom and clinical experiences. Phone calls and text messages can disrupt the learning environment for the person sending/receiving the messages and the student peers in proximity.Classroom and On Campus Labs: When making or receiving personal calls, students should step out of the classroom/lab. Cellphones or other electronic devices can be on the student’s person but must be in “silent” or “off” mode. Any disturbance, including the sound of a vibrating alert, by a student’s cellular phone/electronic device is considered rude and disrespectful. The person with the obtrusive cellular phone/electronic device will be asked to leave the classroom.Students will not have cellphones/electronic devices on their person at all during exams or exam review. They must be stored in a purse or backpack or locker or not allowed in the testing area at all which is the case for all mock state board mini-board practical exams.Cell phones used for research tools and to take pics of consenting clients for hair and nail services only can be used in the Cosmetology lab and classroom.Students may use the Cosmetology lab number (224-5034) as an emergency number in the case that someone needs to contact the student during class hours.RESOURCES FOR STUDENTS:DISABILITY RESOURCE CENTERThe Disability Resource Center (DRC) assists students with documented physical, mental, learning, visual, speech, or hearing disabilities. How to contact the DRC:Main Campus DRC Office:Disability Resource CenterSecond Floor, Student Services CenterSSC Room 209900 University SEMailing address:525 Buena Vista SEAlbuquerque, NM 87106-4096Phone:Voice: (505) 224-3259Toll free: (888)453-1304Fax: (505) 224-3261VETERANS RESOURCE CENTERThe Veteran Resource Center (VRC) provides resources and help for veterans and their families who currently attend or plan to attend CNM.How to contact the VRC:Student Services CenterSSC 207Mailing address:525 Buena Vista SEAlbuquerque, NM 87106Phone: (505) 224-4000 ext. 20456Achievement coachesThe role of the Achievement Coach is to help students succeed with their education and career goals. Sleep deprivation can have similar physiological effects to drug and alcohol intoxication and poses a significant threat to client safety. -Do not come to school or attend class if you are ill. You do not want to spread diseases to others.-Notify the full-time instructor if taking a medication that may or does in fact impair judgement. This could be a safety risk to the student, or client.-Students should use their absences wisely, as a missed class due to illness is a valid absence as students must abide by the 90% attendance rule required by the NMBBC (New Mexico Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists).LATEX ALLERGY POLICYCNM gloves which are used in our dispensary are latex-free. Even though we provide latex-free gloves here at CNM, some salons where students will be performing partial services for COS 2590 Practicum may still have latex gloves. Students who have a known allergy should make the instructor, salon owner and mentor aware of this allergy so they may protect the student from contact with latex.BLOOD BORNE PATHOGEN AND EXPOSURE POLICY The School of Health, Wellness, & Public safety (HWPS) has a comprehensive policy designed to prevent blood borne pathogen (BBP) exposure. Further, the policy outlines in detail the steps that should be taken when and exposure event occurs. The HWPS BBP exposure control plan can be found at the URL: who sustains a cut while working on a client will follow the procedure for BLOOD EXPOSURE PROCEDURE explained in the NIC testing for State Boards.Students will:Remove materials from first aid kitSupplies and materials are visibly cleanCleans injured area with antisepticCovers with dressing that is absorbent and secured (may be an adhesive bandage).Candidate wears glove or finger guardDispose of all contaminated suppliesADDITIONAL INFORMATIONSECURITYSecurity officers are available 24 hours a day. It is recommended that any special situation regarding your security on campus or at the clinical site (restraining orders, stalking, etc.) be communicated to CNM Security as well as nursing faculty. Further, they can provide simple automobile assistance such as help in changing a tire or providing a jump start.Students are also encouraged to sign up for “Attention CNM” emergency text alerts by logging on to Attention CNM. The “Attention CNM” system is provided by Rave Mobile Safety. There is no charge to sign up, but other messaging charge apply depending on the wireless carrier plan and subscription details.SMOKING POLICYThe CNM Governing Board has approved a proposal to make all CNM campuses smoke free. Details of the policy can be found at this URL: WEATHERCNM announces a special schedule due to snow and inclement weather only under extreme conditions. When this occurs, information will be provided to the media regarding specific changes, if possible, by 6:05 a.m. Student can also sign up for text alerts through Attention CNM.In the event that CNM has been closed due to inclement weather, class is also canceled for the day or there will be an announcement that there is a 2-hour delay. Students may call 505 224-4SNO to hear the latest update.CHILDREN ON CAMPUS AND IN THE COSMETOLOGY LAB/CLASSROOMCNM does not provide childcare. It is CNM policy that children may not attend classes, labs, or clinical/extern sites with students. Further, children should not be left unattended in cars, non-instructional areas, or in CNM computer labs. Persons of 16 years and older are allowed in the Cosmetology lab for services. No one under the age of 16 is allowed in the Cosmetology lab and children should not be left unattended.GRADUATIONREQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATIONThe Associate of Applied Science in Cosmetology degree is granted to cosmetology students on completion of all courses in the prescribed curriculum with a grade of ‘C’ or better with 75% accuracy or better overall in each course. Students must apply for graduation; this is not something the cosmetology program can do on the student’s behalf.Note: If a student in cosmetology leaves the course of study, they can return to the program to complete the curriculum within one year. If a student graduates and does not take the boards within a year, they must return to school to enroll for an additional 180 hours to be eligible to test with NIC testing according to the New Mexico Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists.Testing information can be found on . On the website, students can register for testing for the final state board exam. All NIC forms for testing can be found on the NIC website IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 protects people from discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities that receive Federal financial assistance. The student is advised of the policies of the program and the importance of attendance in each class. This document is signed by each student and kept on file by the instructor of each class. The document is entitled MAXIMUM OPPORTUNITY FOR LEARNING.The second document is entitled “CNM HWPS Confidentiality Agreement”. This document ensures the safety of information between clients and fellow students. Both documents will require signatures from the students while enrolled in classes at CNM. Maximum Opportunity for LearningCosmetology team members must have an excellent attendance record, as client treatment is planned in advance with a schedule that is strictly adhered to and predicated on every Cosmetology team member being present and in their role as a stylist and cosmetologist. Students must demonstrate their ability to be present and depended upon for their clients in the Cosmetology lab while enrolled in the Cosmetology program. That dependability is reflected in the grading process of the program. In addition, being present during theory classes and lab classes is the best mechanism for mastery of knowledge and skills necessary for becoming a competent nail technician, esthetician, or cosmetologist.A classmate’s notes and/or audio tapes do not provide the visual learning opportunities or the opportunity to question or actively participate in the learning process. 95% of students are visual and/or activity-based learners. Therefore, attendance is mandatory for Maximum Opportunity for Learning. The grade earned must reflect the amount of time present during classes, lectures and labs.Cosmetology Lab AbsenteeismEvery time a student is absent from the lab, they will not earn points/hours for the day. If a student arrives late or tardy, it is considered an absence. If a student leaves early, it is considered an absence. If they arrive to the lab in inappropriate attire, they are sent home with an accrued absence for the day. If one is not present to earn points, no points will be given for the day. Daily assignments are a large percentage of the total grade of any class and being present will be required to have a passing grade for the course. Being present all the time provides the student with the Maximum Opportunity for Learning. Maximum Opportunity for Learning. Students with the best attendance records are at an advantage for the highest grades. Instructors are not responsible for putting in extra time to each information to students who are frequently absent. If health problems or personal problems make it impossible for a student to be present for all, or most of the time, we recommend that the student withdraw from the program and reapply at a time when they are able to avail themselves to the Maximum Opportunity for learning. Our attendance policy does not allow more than a 10% absence total from any course at any time during the course, even after the add/drop date. If a student exceeds the maximum allowable absences, they are dropped from the class. If they exceed absences and it is after the add/drop date, they will lose all points accumulated to date from weekly assignments and will result in a failing grade. The student will have to repeat the entire term if they fail one class. This policy is in accordance with the New Mexico Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists. Your signature indicates that you have read and understand this policy and realize that points lost due to absenteeism could result in your failing one or more courses, and your dismissal from the program. Classes are co-requisite in each term and failing one class means you are dropped from all classes.Student Signature: ________________________________Date: _______________________Class_______________________________Term___________________________________CNM SCHOOL OF HEALTH, WELLNESS AND PUBLIC SAFETY CONFIDENTIALTIY AGREEMENTAny individual requiring access to client information or business information at any Practicum site must sign this agreement in order to receive access.
