Costa Rican Weather and climate. “Summer/Dry Winter/Wet Seasons”Surprisingly names of Costa Rica’s seasons are reversed relative to Europe the U.S. and Canada. While the north is blanketed in snow from December to April Costa Rica is enjoying “summer”.This can be confusing when you pause to realize that Costa Rica is not in the southern hemisphere, it’s in the northern. Unless you’re working on a degree in atmospheric science, it’s better to just accept this quirk and enjoy it rather than trying to explain it. We’ll look at that in Higher Geography! The dry season is from January to March and follows the precipitation patterns on the Pacific side where the beach resorts are located. The wet months are known as the “Green Season” for tourism marketing purposes. It sounds way better than rainy.Questions:What is surprising about Costa Rica’s weather?Which hemisphere is Costa Rica in?Name the months of the Costa Rican dry season? Why are the wet months called the “Green Season”?Costa Rican Weather and climate. The main attraction of the dry season is the weather. It is less likely that it will rain even in the rainforest, and in some areas, notably Guanacaste and Nicoya it’s downright arid. Wildlife can be easier to spot as it concentrates around shrinking water sources and the deciduous trees drop their leaves thinning the camouflage. Temperatures can soar to 34 degrees Celsius and prices become higher because of the dry seasons popularity with tourists.Rainy season traveling in Costa Rica can be pleasantly surprising. Over half the days it doesn’t rain at all and the rest of the time it is a couple of hours rain in the afternoon withbrilliant sunshine before and after. In more than three months there are often only two stretches of three days when it rained most of the time. During these drizzly days, it was clear and sunny on the opposite side of the country. Temperatures are a more comfortable 28 degrees Celsius.Questions:Why is the dry season better for wildlife spotting? What is surprising about the rainy season? Many Costa Rica regulars prefer the green season, but there are some disadvantages as well. There are some areas where it is really wet, particularly the Atlantic slopes, and the northeast and southwest. The Osa Peninsula gets so much rain that travel becomes difficult and many of the tourist lodges shut down in September and October. The rains end in December but the forests remain lush into the new year while dry sunny weather prevails on the beaches. It’s one of the best times for wildlife when tropical species like monkeys and sloths are joined by migrant birds from the north, humpback whales giving birth in the warm waters, and sea turtles nesting on shore.Questions:7.
