We have a wonderful lineup of teachers covering all aspects of rug hooking and we are excited about their talents and what they have to offer in each of their classes. About Cape May, New JerseyCape May, a seaside resort since the 1800’s, is rich with historic Victorian architecture and has captured the hearts of the young and old. As discovered long ago by high society in Philadelphia and the South, the spa qualities of its sandy shores and waters warmed by the Gulf Stream will refresh your body and soul. If beach lounging isn’t for you, put on your walking shoes for a stroll on the boardwalk or bicycle on tree shaded neighborhood streets. Gas street lamps add a touch of yesterday to the evening. Steeped in American history, Cape May offers a peek into the past with many tours of restored homes as well as antiques shops, art exhibits and specialty shops. September is also the peak of hawk migration and the Audubon Society offers many bird walks as well as the internationally known hawk watch at Cape May Point. Come have a fall love affair with Cape May.About The Chalfonte301 Howard Street, Cape May, NJ --- 609-884-8409 or The Chalfonte was built in 1876 by the northern Civil War hero Colonel Henry Sawyer. The hotel was purchased in 1910 by the Satterfield family of Richmond, Virginia. They are credited with imbuing the hotel with its Southern ambiance. In 2008 Robert Mullock bought Cape May’s “grand lady” and he is committed to preserving the historic landmark with the addition of modern conveniences. Chalfonte guest rooms are unique in character, featuring classic seashore cottage design. Most rooms now have air conditioning; other rooms are cooled by ceiling fans and crisp Atlantic breezes. Accommodations are comfortable and quaint and feature private or semi-private baths. Telephones and a color television are located off the main lobby. Cape May can also be reached via the ferry departing from Lewes, Delaware. The closest airports are Philadelphia, 90 miles northwest and Atlantic City, 40 miles north. MaterialsPrior to the start of classes, teachers will contact you about your project for the week. They can provide patterns and custom wool if needed. If you plan to hook at night, please bring a work lamp and extension cord.Teaching StaffWeek 1 September 8 – 13, 2019Ingrid Hieronimus Ontario, CanadaMAKING IT EASY: Using spots, dip dyes or swatches Ingrid will demonstrate how easy it is to shade in all cuts and all pattern styles. Ingrid enjoys combining regular hooking with appliqué, proddy and punch hooking. She has also mastered creative stitches and will show you how they can create special effects. You can try one or all of these techniques on your project that can be a commercial pattern or your own design. Ingrid is well known and has a following for her vibrantly dyed wool. She has developed and published three Primary Fusion dye books. Ingrid is triple certified with the Ontario Hooking Craft Guild, the McGown Guild and St. Lawrence College in Ontario. Kris Miller Howell, MichiganSOFT PRIMITIVES: Join Kris to explore soft colors, subtle value changes and beautiful textures with a pattern of your choice. Kris’ two most recent publications The Grand Finale, a self-published finishing guide and Introduction to Rug Hooking, a beginner’s guide published by Rug Hooking Magazine offer fresh material she will review and demonstrate in class. Kathy Spellacy York, MaineA FEW OF OUR FAVORITE THINGS: Hooking for close to 20 years, Kathy has come to love primitive, geometric, oriental and floral rugs. Currently working on her McGown certification, Kathy combines textures and mixed cuts to create interesting effects in her hooked mats and rugs. Wool and Goods, Kathy’s business, features the beloved Patsy Becker Rug Collection. Kathy is committed to having each student leave with their project well on it way to becoming the rug they envisioned. Look for Patsy B patterns in the shop and visit Kathy’s website for more inspiration. .Diane Stoffel Brewster, MassachusettsNON-STOP ENERGY: In her first career Diane was an art teacher and her artistic skills have made her one of the most popular teachers in the country. She never stops moving and leads her students to beautifully crafted colorful rugs. She is comfortable working with all types of patterns and offers “tweaks” that will set your rug apart from the rest. Diane will bring a supply of wool but can also dye something special for your rug. Diane is an accredited McGown teacher and has a vast historical knowledge of who’s who in the rug hooking world. She will lead an open class where any hooking style and size cut can be applied to your project. Focusing on the use of light and color in your wool choices, Capri will help you achieve your preferred outcome. From problem solving an existing project to developing new skills with your hooking, the possibilities are unlimited. Custom design and custom dyeing is available upon request; many of her designs are available as patterns or kits. She loves incorporating textures, plaids, as-is, and any other kind of wool you find into your own rug. Her work with color is subtle but definitive. Cammie enjoys playing with shapes and has created many interesting edges and borders on her rug designs. She can help you customize your pattern edge with a unique finish. Week 2, continuedMichele Micarelli New Haven, ConnecticutSPLASH IN THE WAVES: Join Michele to explore water in many forms-think snow, beach waves, geysers and waterfalls. Her beautifully dyed wool will enhance any rug you consider and don’t forget about original design. Michele’s creativity knows no bounds so come explore her fantasy world of mermaids, dragons, peacocks, griffons and of course medieval jugglers and more. Her rug collection was featured during the opening year of the North American Museum of Rug Hooking in Nova Scotia. Michele is McGown certified and works with all styles and cuts. Frost as inspiration. Develop a rug with strong artistic concepts learned from the historical rugs made during the 1880’s through the 1930’s. Lisanne will show you how to create warm and inviting backgrounds combining many different wools and hooking techniques. Well known for her “no rules just have fun” approach to rug hooking Lisanne will guide you through the creative process for fantastic effects. From fun, bright colors to primitive palates and medium to hand torn strips, she will help you love what you make. Katie enjoys the excitement of adding fibers of all types to create an uneven pile. Spinning art yarn is something she enjoys with no two skeins the same; Katie will show you how to incorporate them into you hooking for maximum pop. Her fun and lively style will keep you energized and engaged the whole week. Katie is a certified McGown teacher and was Co-Chair of the highly successful ATHA Biennial in Cleveland. See examples of her work on our blog at rugsbythesea..Lucille Festa East Rupert, Vermont ALL AMERICAN FESTIVAL: A history buff and long time antique collector, Lucille incorporates folk art and Americana images into many of her designs. Using wool plaids, checks, tweeds and herringbones, over-dyed and as is, she works to achieve soft and mellow colorations that have the look of being old but not worn. With a keen sense of color, her ultimate goal is for you to create a unique wide-cut hooked rug that is aesthetically pleasing to hand down to the next generation. Lucille’s patterns will be available in the shop and can be viewed on her website at .Chizuko Hayami Tokyo, JapanELEGANT SIMPLICITY: Chizuko is known for beautifully hooked William Morris inspired rugs. They hang in her home in Japan. The focus for this class will include leaves, flowers, buds and stems. Building on her elegant simplicity she will help you to develop a strategy for these important rug elements. Bring a William Morris inspired pattern or any floral pattern. Chizuko will work with all cuts, fine through wide, and all types of wool. She will contact you before class about your wool needs or dye formula suggestions as she will be restricted to the amount of wool she can ship. Chizuko is a certified McGown teacher and holds classes in her studio in Tokyo. Each year she travels to the United States or Canada to keep up with the latest trends in rug hooking.Beginner’s Class (Available all three weeks)GETTING STARTED: For those who have never pulled up a loop, learn the basics of rug hooking Monday morning with Linda or Norma. Then join one of our regular classes based on your interests and class themes. On the registration write “beginner class”. We will contact you regarding the supplies you will need and which class you will join Monday afternoon.
