On May 1st, 2013, De Gruyter acquired Ontos Verlag, a publishing house devoted to analytical philosophy. The program includes 23 book series, all edited by excellent and renowned scholars in their respective areas of research, and 3 journals. The languages of publication are English and German.

Since April 2012, De Gruyter owns the Birkhäuser architecture and design list. The takeover includes the Birkhäuser brand name. The ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore and De Gruyter have formed an editorial and commercial partnership for ISEAS’s publications in South East Asian Social Studies, Politics and Economics. ISEAS is the largest publisher in those fields.

This includes a frontlist of titles and a backlist of approximately 950 titles from 2017 back to 1970, the year ISEAS was founded. Approximately 25 titles will be added each year. De Gruyter will distribute all content – frontlist, backlist and archive – that is available electronically.

16 January 2018

Amsterdam University Press (AUP) and De Gruyter have formed a commercial partnership to distribute AUP’s English-language e-books. AUP publishes over 100 new academic monographs every year, including in the areas of European History, Asian Studies, Contemporary Society, Film & Media and Linguistics.

The agreement with De Gruyter includes 120 frontlist titles for 2018, 140 frontlist titles in 2019 as well as a backlist of 470 titles including 250 open access titles from 2000 to 2018.

Gorgias Press and De Gruyter have formed an editorial and commercial partnership for Gorgias Press titles. Through this agreement, eBook versions of all Gorgias Press titles will be available on .

Gorgias Press has published over 3,000 titles in history, language and religious studies, with specific areas of expertise in the Ancient Near East, Arabic and Islamic Studies, Archaeology, Biblical Studies, Classics, Early Christianity, Jewish Studies, Linguistics, and Syriac. Gorgias Press is based in Piscataway, NJ, USA.

The agreement includes the Gorgias Press output of 75 titles per year and a backlist of more than 3,000 titles, all renowned in their fields for their outstanding level of quality.

De Gruyter has acquired the renowned publisher Düsseldorf University Press (DUP) retroactively to 1 January 2018.

Düsseldorf University Press was founded in 2008 with the objective of publishing research from Heinrich-Heine-University (HHU) in Düsseldorf, Germany and from other universities. Publications include scholarly monographs, collections and series to dissertations, Festschriften, textbooks and study materials as well as scientific guidebooks. DUP also offers early career researchers an opportunity to make their research results available to a larger spectrum of the general public.

Thieme offers a wide range of health-science books focusing on neurosurgery, otolaryngology, orthopedic surgery, ophthalmology, radiology, complementary and alternative medicine, audiology and speech and language pathology.

The Thieme Medical Publishing Group is one of the few publishing firms that remains a family owned and run business. With the same dedication that Georg Thieme had over a century ago, Thieme still stands apart from its competitors by emphasizing high standards of quality in content and presentation in all of its products.

Thieme announced in August 2016 the acquisition of the plastic surgery book program from CRC Press, which included their titles purchased from Quality Medical Publishers (QMP).  These titles, authored or edited by many of the world’s leading plastic and reconstructive surgeons, will be integrated into Thieme’s existing portfolio in plastic and reconstructive surgery, strengthening Thieme’s position as a market leader in this field. Selected spine surgery titles are also included in the acquisition.

Effective January 1st, 2017, Thieme will acquire Stuttgart-based publishing house Schattauer Verlag.

Schattauer Publishers is an owner-managed company, founded in 1949, independent from media groups and investment firms. It is being managed by owner and publisher Dieter Bergmann. Dipl.-Psych. Dr. Wolf Bertram, as second managing director, is responsible for the scientific contents of the publishing program. Jan Half is the third managing director and deals with "new media". In addition, he is also a member of the management team for the publishing house Psychiatry Verilog in Cologne.

Moore tan 1.200 Books available

Currently, about 1.200 books, ebooks and digital data are available from Schattauer (with 60 new publications approx. each year), mostly atlasses, text- and reference books for physicians and students as well as other health professionals. Numerous titles have been published in various languages, both by Schattauer as well as under license by international publishers. The color atlasses enjoy a worldwide reputation, especially the title Anatomy. A Photographic Atlas, which has already been published in 20 languages. By now a major emphasis lies on monographs and textbooks on psychosomatic medicine, psychiatry and psychotherapy. 

Professional journals for all medical specialists

21 journals on human and veterinary medicine, medical informatics, psychotherapy and psychiatry are another focus of Schattauer’s activities.

Nervenheilkunde  (Neurology) has the highest circulation of all Schattauer’s journals with about 30.000 copies per issue and 11 issues per year.

The English-speaking journal Thrombosis and Haemostasis  is distributed all around the world and due to its high impact factor offers a prominent international stage in the field of blood coagulation. In addition to the print versions, all journals are avaible online. In order to allow for the growing importance of web-based media, Schattauer founded its first electronic-only journal, ACI – Applied Clinical Informatics, in 2010.
