Check with each school to make sure that you submit your FAFSA and other required documents by the priority deadline to ensure the maximum amount of financial aid possible.Important Financial Aid InformationFAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The 2020-2021 FAFSA is an online application that collects personal and financial data that the federal government uses to determine your family's ability to pay for college. Filing the FAFSA is the first step to paying for college. The FAFSA allows students to access federal money, like the Pell Grant or Stafford Loan, and state or institutional money. The FAFSA also opens doors to some scholarships. Colleges use the FAFSA information to determine if the student qualifies for state or institutional aid. Students will receive different “aid packages” depending on the school. The FAFSA is based on income eligibility and asks information based on 2018 parent and student taxes. The information you input in the FAFSA is then sent to your prospective colleges to determine your amount of aid. The entire application is completed online and should take about 45 minutes with the proper tools. The FAFSA asks questions regarding your 2018 taxes. Depending on the school, financial aid deadlines approach as early as December 1, 2019. Missing the financial aid deadline will result in the student receiving no financial aid, regardless of eligibility. This date may be before the student has submitted an application for admission. You are not required to submit an application for admission to a school if you sent your FAFSA to that school, so you may list ANY prospective college on your FAFSA. Many families choose not to file the FAFSA because they believe they will not receive financial aid. Though this may be true for some families, the FAFSA is an important application for several other reasons. The FAFSA allows the student to be considered for institutional aid, which is separate from federal money, and certain scholarships. Several local scholarships that become available in the spring will require that the student have already filed a FAFSA. Even if your results from the FAFSA do not qualify you for aid, the application is 100% free. It is very important that you make sure you are going to the correct links online-- there are some sites that will want you to pay for the FAFSA, which is a scam. I ask that you read the instructions thoroughly before starting the FAFSA. The dependency questions and who your “parent” is can be difficult according to certain situations. You can find resources to help determine dependency status and who your “parent” is on the FAFSA website, fafsa.. You can also talk to your counselor or Mr. Justus to help determine dependency status and whose information to use when filling out “parent” information. The FAFSA is an extremely important application. There will be a FAFSA completion event after school at Liberty High School in the spring. There is no appointment necessary to attend this event and there will be computer access as well as on-site help from professionals. Parent and student are also able to schedule appointments with Mr. Justus to complete the FAFSA during or after school. To file the FAFSA, you will need the following items: FSA ID (see other flyer for information on how to make an FSA ID)Social security numbers for parent and student (both parents if parent is married or remarried)Marriage or divorce month and year for parents Copies of 2018 tax forms for parent and student (if student filed taxes in 2018) Email accounts and passwords to access email accounts Please feel free to reach out to Mr. Justus with any questions or to set up an appointment at joshua.justus@ or by calling (540) 422-7367. ................
