Title: How do I set up an ODBC Connection?
Answer:
Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) is an open standard application programming interface (API) for accessing a database.
There are several steps involved in setting up an ODBC connection.
Step 1: Setup up SafeKey rights
SafeKey rights in Abila MIP Fund Accounting allow you to grant security rights to Accounting and Payroll tables for the active organization (the organization you are currently logged into). This feature allows you to access your Accounting and Payroll data using Microsoft Query, Access, Excel, Word, and other ODBC applications. This access is read-only; therefore, you cannot change or damage your data in any way.
Navigate to Administration > Security > Set Up Organization Menus
• Select the User or Group.
• Grant View rights to the Accounting Tables, Payroll Tables or both under SafeKey
• NOTE: In order for SafeKey rights to save, the user must have a complex password, please go back in and verify the checkmark for SafeKey is still there after you’ve saved

You can utilize SafeKey access to the raw data via a third-party application to generate customized reports not available in the user interface, create labels, view field information not displayed in the user interface, etc. However, since SafeKey allows view access to RAW data, you will need to become familiar with the format in which the information is stored. Use the Default Table Structure (Organization > Default Table Structure) information to learn about the structure in which the data is housed.
Step 2: ODBC Connection
1. Go to Start > Run and type “ODBCAD32”

Tips:
If the ODBC connection is broken and you are unable to access the database, set up a new User ID with SafeKey rights and recreate the ODBC connection.
