Exam Time: January 15, 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM

Tutorials: Wed 3:30 - 4:30pm and Mon/Tues 8:00 - 8:30am

EXAM FORMAT:

Text Analysis

Students will answer short analysis questions on the texts read in the semester.

Creative Writing

Students will write a creative piece using one of three prompts provided. It will cover material from the course texts covered in the semester.

KEY TOPICS AND THEMES:

Independent Study Novel

plot, characters, important quotations, themes, symbols, historical context, author information

-Examples-

Analysis:

1. Did you find your independent study novel meaningful? Why/why not? Can you relate it in any significant way to your life? Explain.

2. Describe your experience in reading this story. Did the story surprise you, entertain you, annoy you? Why? Did the story engage you and hold your interest? Why or why not?

Creative Writing:

3. Write a short epilogue to your novel. You should incorporate the same tone and writing style the author used in creating their work.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

plot, characters, themes, symbols, motifs, important quotations, love, family, Shakespeare, setting, a play within a play, historical context, a play within a play

Analysis:

1. Based on the types of love found in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, what do you believe Shakespeare’s opinion of love to be? Use examples from the text to explain your opinion.

2. Discuss the limitations of the city and the forest in the text. How do they shape the outcome/story line? Why do you believe the author placed these limitations on what can happen in each setting?

Creative Writing:

3. Create a series of Facebook or Twitter updates from the point of view of Puck as he journeys throughout the forest. Be sure to write from Puck’s point of view using his “voice” and tone.

A Streetcar Named Desire

Analysis:

1. Explore how light is used as a motif in the play A Streetcar Named Desire (“And then the searchlight which had been turned on the world was turned off again….”)

2. Desire is used throughout the play. Blanche says “desire is the opposite of death.” What does this mean? Explore what desire represents to the main characters.

Creative Writing:

3. Write a diary entry from the point of view of Blanche when she arrives at the hospital. Discuss her feelings on being removed from the Kowalski’s house, Mitch’s treatment of her, and meeting the doctor. Be sure to use Blanche’s “voice” in your writing.

PROPOSED STUDY SCHEDULE:

Before Jan 7- organize binder, make sure you have all notes and tests and begin reviewing these while completing the CCT

Jan 9 - Weekend - Review practice exam, write sample creative writing piece, review themes and plot of novels covered

Jan 12- Bring sample writing piece and practice exam to class to discuss

Jan 13- Bring any final questions to class

SUGGESTED STUDY METHODS:

- create themed mind maps/graphic organizer that combines all three novels of study

- flash cards of important characters

- review creative writing prompts (re-do them if desired)

- create discussion questions that combine all three texts

MATERIAL NOT ON EXAM:

All material evaluated on the mid-term will NOT be evaluated on this exam (poetry, short stories, and media will not be evaluated on the final exam.)

SUCCESS CRITERIA

In order to be successful on the exam you should:

- know how to read and analyse teacher and student selected texts to write for an intended audience and purpose

- know how to proofread and edit your work

- know how to use proper academic language (sentence structure, grammar, spelling) appropriate to this level of English (Grade Eleven)
