SESSION 2 + 3: act as a tourist guide

TIPS TO MAKE COMMUNICATION FLOW

Many body language experts seem to agree that between 50-80% of all human communications are non-verbal. So, it is generally accepted that non-verbal communications are very important in how we understand each other (or fail to), especially in face-to-face communications.

This is the reason why tourist guides and any other profession involving mainly communication should consider the following tips:

1. Eye contact conveys interest and encourages your partner to be interested in you in return.

2. Gestures. These include gestures with your hands and face. Make your whole body talk. Use smaller gestures for individuals and small groups. The gestures should get larger as the group that one is addressing increases in size.

3. Don’t send mixed messages. Make your words, gestures, facial expressions and tone match.

4. Be aware of what your body is saying. Body language can say so much more than a mouthful of words. Arms relaxed at your sides tells anyone around you that you are approachable and open to hearing what they have to say. Arms crossed on the chest, on the other hand, suggest disinterest in conversation or inflexibility.

5. Manifest constructive attitudes and beliefs. The attitudes you bring to communication will have a huge impact on the way you interact with others. Choose to be honest, patient, optimistic, sincere, respectful, and accepting of others. Be sensitive to other people's feelings, and believe in others' competence.

6. Develop effective listening skills: Listening requires more than hearing words. It requires a desire to understand another human being, an attitude of respect and acceptance, and a willingness to get involved in the communication process.

7. Enunciate your words. Speak clearly and don’t mumble.

8. Pronounce your words correctly. People will judge your competency through your vocabulary. If you aren’t sure of how to say a word, don’t use it.3

9. Use the right words. If you’re not sure of the meaning of a word, don’t use it.

10. Slow your speech down. People will perceive you as nervous and unsure of yourself if you talk fast.

11. Animate your voice. Avoid a monotone intonation.

12. Use appropriate volume. Use a volume that is appropriate for the setting. Speak more softly when you are alone and close. Speak louder when you are speaking to larger groups or across larger spaces.

EXERCISES:

Watch the following video and discuss in groups the reasons why you think communication flows. Then, share with the rest of the group your ideas and compare them.

Then, a student volunteers to read aloud a text trying to follow the tips to make communication flow. A group discussion follows.

1. Read the following skills a guided tourist should have and in groups of two or three students think of another one and describe it.

[pic]

Public Speaking and Narration Skills

You will generally be speaking in front of a huge group of people on most of the tours you lead. Groups can have anywhere from 10 to 60 people, so you have to understand the basic principles of public speaking. You should learn how to speak clearly, how to project your voice, how to talk calmly and slowly so that people can understand you, and also learn how to control your breathing so that you don't get tired.

Narration is all about being enthusiastic, capturing your audience's attention and allowing the tourists to feel as though they are part of the story.

Excellent Problem Solving Skills

Just like any job, problems tend to arise. Therefore, you have to be a good problem solver if you hope to be a good tour guide, and know how to deal with anything that comes your way quickly and efficiently.

Good Language Skills

Being good at languages is another great skill that tour guides should have. English the global language so its command is essential. However, the more languages you speak the more chances you will have to find a job as a tour guide.

Great Organizational and Leadership Skills

Developing this skill is one that will make your job easier by avoiding problems and risks on the tour and thus saving time and money.

2. Find twenty personality adjectives in the following word search. Then, discuss in groups of three or four students which adjectives a good tourist guide should have.

SESSION 4: giving information

INFORMATION ABOUT PUBLIC TRANSPORT

| |

| |

PASSAGE 1

This page contains essential information on the Barcelona metro underground system.

*The following ticket price information will be valid until the end of December 2013 when ticket prices are updated*

Metro And Bus Tickets

You can buy tickets for individual journeys for the metro at €2.00 per ticket. But if you are here for more than one day or intend taking more than 5 journeys on the metro or buses it's best to buy the T10 ticket (see below).

Barcelona Transport Card

The Barcelona Transport Card will give you unlimited travel on the Barcelona Metro, FGC, TMB buses, the main tram and the RENFE train to and from Barcelona Airport (El Prat de Llobregat). Nearly all of Barcelona attractions are accessiblvia the metro system therefore you have your transport covered when you purchase this card. You can also use it on the TMB bus from Barcelona centre to Barcelona Airport however it cannot be used on the Aerobus (the express bus service to the airport). It also cannot be used on the Montjuic Cable Car or the Tram Blau (the tram that goes up to Tibidabo mountain). The Transport Card can be purchased to cover anything between 2 to 5 days of transport. You can purchase this card online before you arrive in Barcelona and can pick it up when you arrive in Barcelona International Airport at the Barcelona Turisme information office during normal operating hours. The tourist offices are situated in Terminal 1 and Terminal 2B. The main advantage of the Barcelona Transport Card is that is that it is economical, convenient and your transport costs are mostly covered on your trip to Barcelona.

[pic] PASSAGE 2

Buying individual tickets for each journey is not economical or time effective unless you will be making only 3 journeys on public transport. Much better is to buy a T10 , a Transport Card or the travel and discount card called the Barcelona Card.

Barcelona Card - Transport and Discount Ticket

The Barcelona card not only gives you free unlimited transport as the Barcelona Travel Card above but it also entitles you to discounts on the entrance fees to attractions, shows, restaurants and souvenir shopping etc as well.

If you want Free unlimited number of journeys on public transport for the duration of your holiday with discounts on activities consider the Barcelona Card. It can save you a lot of bother in buying tickets and save you money.

The T10 ticket (Zone 1 ticket) is another type of transport card which you can purchase at the entrance to any metro station. Unlike the Barcelona Transport Card a T10 ticket will only entitle you to 10 journeys on the metro, FGC (FGC run train lines similar to the metro around the city centre) buses, tram and RENFE all Zone 1 areas. The main city centre areas are all in Zone 1.

It is possible to buy a T10 for each of the other 6 zones however to see most of the Barcelona attractions and the city centre you only need a T10 (Zone 1) and this article it referring to this ticket.

|
 |

PASSAGE 3

A T10 costs only €9.80 and will save you the trouble of buying individual tickets for each journey as well as saving you money. A normal single journey ticket costs you €2.00 so with a T10 you save €10.20 for 10 journeys!

T10 is valid indefinitely within a calendar year (however the card will expire one month after the new tariffs are released in January each year) and can be shared with other members of your group. Note to use the T10 for each person you have to put the card in the machine and then pull it out completely from the ticket validation machine - this will release the turnstile to allow you through. Leave the card on the machine for the next member of your group to use the T10. Each time someone in your group uses the T10 it counts as a separate journey.

You can buy a T10 from any metro stop and from the Airport at the entrance to the RENFE train. Please note that the T10 (Zone 1) is valid for journeys in Barcelona City Centre Zone 1 on the metro, FGC and TMB buses, Tram and RENFE. If you need to travel outside of Zone 1 you can buy a different T10 zone ticket that will cover you for other zones.

The T10 is valid on the RENFE train to the airport but not valid on the Aerobus (the express bus service to the airport).

A little known point about the T10 ticket. The T10 ticket can be used on more than one means of transport and all be counted as a single journey provided that your journey is less than 1 hour and 15 minutes. This means for example, you can make changes at metro stops (provided you don't leave the metro), then leave the metro and jump on a bus to finish your journey or vice versa as long as the total length of the journey is less than 1 hour and 15 minutes. NOTE you cannot re-enter the metro once you have left it - this would count as another journey.

Imagine you are the person who attends the tourists in the tourist information in Barcelona and they ask you questions about public transport in the city. Read the text above about the Barcelona travel card and give the correct answers. At the end invent one own question and write as well the correct answer:

Information desk: Good morning, can I help you?

Tourist: Yes, please, I want to visit Barcelona and I need some

information about the public transports.

Information desk: Yes, of course, ask me your questions!

Tourist: How much does an underground ticket cost in Barcelona?

Information desk: .........................................................................

Tourist: Oh, it’s expensive, can you suggest me a special ticket, how much

does it cost?

Information desk: ..........................................................................

Tourist: Thanks, can I use the T10 Metro ticket every day?

Information desk: .........................................................................

Tourist: I have two children, seven and eight years old. Must they also

use this ticket?

Information desk: .........................................................................

Tourist: Which kind of public transports can I use with this Travel Card?

Information desk: ...........................................................................

Tourist: Is there a limit of journeys in one day?

Information desk: .............................................................................

Tourist: ............................................................................................

Information desk: ...........................................................................

Tourist: Thank you very much for your information. Please give me two

Travel Cards.

Information desk: Here you have them, it will make 30 €. Enjoy your time!
