Description: Alcohol, drug and tobacco use by young people are persistent public health problems that impact

all of us. Yet in spite of decades of research, many of the approaches we have been using to combat these serious

issues are backward and don’t work. Many of us have been trying to “scare the health” into kids and young adults

rather than utilizing science-based approaches. This presentation details the theory and application of the social

norms approach to prevention to change behavior by altering misperceptions of what is normal. Social Norms

Marketing has recently been listed in New York Times Magazine as one of the emerging ideas to change the

world. Dr. Linkenbach provides examples and behind the scenes antidotes to Montana’s nationally renowned

MOST OF US campaigns, which have measured behavior change in issues such as impaired driving, seatbelt

use and tobacco use, as well as other emerging applications. Jeff Linkenbach, Ed.D, is the Project Director

of the Montana Social Norms project and faculty member at Montana State University. Dr. Linkenbach is

well known for being a pioneer in the area of the social norms approach to prevention. His research and

innovative project development constantly strive to translate Social Science into social action through

radio, television, print campaigns and other forms of media advocacy and strategic communications.
