The same year, or nearly so, he located about the present site of Mt. Holly, Burlington County, New Jersey. He became a brush manufacturer and died, probably November 1757 in Chesterfield Township, Burlington County, New Jersey.” In writing about his son John, the unknown author said “He spelled this name Bavis. Notes by Norman Eugene McIndoo, 1949:

“Joseph Bevis was a pioneer of New Jersey. He and his daughter, Sarah, traveled from Virginia to Illinois, then to Ohio, and finally to Indiana, always traveling in a covered wagon. Sarah’s mother was dead at that time and she was her father’s housekeeper. They had traveled so much and to so many places that one day she became angry at him and mockingly told him that she was going to marry the first man that came along. That man was John McIndoo, her loving husband for over 50 years.

Joseph’s close relatives left Indiana early and went to Oregon over the Oregon trail, and I have been told that the name Bevis is rather common today in that state. I have failed to learn the names of Joseph Bevis’ father and mother (according to Norman in 1949) but according to the early records there were many by the name of Bevis in the east, particularly in New Jersey.

The 1850 census for Owen County, Indiana, shows that Joseph Bevis, aged 73, lived with his son-in-law, John McIndoo. On June 4, 1837, Joseph married Frances Tooley,, but they did not stay together. Sometime before 1850, Joseph left Bartholomew County, Indiana and went to Owen County, Indiana to live with his daughter Sarah. He opened up a shoe shop and on one of his trips to Spencer [Indiana] to get supplies he became ill. On the trip home he became too ill to travel so he stopped at the Mason home, and there died of pneumonia on 26 Sept 1851 and was buried in the New Hope or McIndoo Cemetery on the McIndoo farm (New Union Cemetery). He was born 17 Oct 1776, presumably in New Jersey.”

1815: The United States Post Office at Atsion, Burlington County, New Jersey was moved to “nearby at Sooy’s Inn” which was actually almost eight miles distant over the Tuckerton stage road, at the place long called Washington.

1822: died.

No date: buried Pleasant Mills Church Cemetery, Burlington County, New Jersey.

13 June 1832: the Post Office moved from “Sooy’s Inn” back to Atison, New Jersey.

When Nicholas died, his son, Paul Sears Sooy took charge of the Washington Tavern and soon was as renowned a host as his father had been. Until 1820 the stage trip to Tuckerton required two days and Washington Tavern was the principal overnight stop. Even after 1820, when the stages ran through in a day, the drivers usually paused here to change their horses and permit shaken passengers to refresh themselves and stretch their cramped legs...The name “Sooy’s” seems to have been changed. A map of 1834 shows “Sooy’s” and an 1839 map shows “Washington”. An 1849 map notes, besides the tavern, two houses, one belonging to W>H>Sooy (brother of Paul Sears Sooy). [he text continued describing the transition from a busy community to an abandoned “ghost town”.]

The above notes about the election, post office and the Sooy Inn have come from: Iron in the Pines, The Story of New Jersey’s Ghost Towns and Bog Iron, Arthur D. Pierce, New Brunswick, New Jersey: Rutgers University Press, 1990.
