Current Event Speech Assignment - Communication Studies

[Pages:1]Current Event Speech Assignment

What am I doing? 1. Find a 2017 article of your choice on a current event. The LA Times, NPR, BBC, and

even the CQ Researcher (library database) are some source suggestions for your to check out; you are not limited to these sources.

2. Make note of what could be used as supporting material (i.e. examples, stories, testimonies, facts, and statistics) in your speech. See Chapter 8, pages 54-60.

3. Write a 1-minute report on your current event.

1. Begin your speech with "This just in..." or "Breaking news..."

2. Include supporting material from the article that you highlighted either by:

? quoting (only if necessary) ? summarizing ? paraphrasing

3. Make sure you cite your article somewhere in the report (but not at the end of the speech). You could just cite your source immediately after the opening phrase. For example, "This just in, The LA Times on January 3rd, 2017 reported..."

4. End your speech with "And that's your news." Or something along those lines that brings closure to your report. Do not just end with "That's it."

Note: You will have a 30 second grace period after the 1-minute mark. This means your speech should be no less than 1 minute and no more than 1 minute and 30 seconds. Anything more/less will be penalized 1-point for every 30 seconds over/under.

What am I turning in? 1. A 1-page typed manuscript of your complete speech with a work cited indicating the

source you used.

1. The approximate word count for a 1 minute speech is about 150-200 words.

2. The work cited should follow MLA guidelines. These guidelines can be found in your text or the LACC library website. You do not need a separate page.

Note: This manuscript must be submitted at the start of class and is not to be used during your speech. You may use one 3x5 notecard during your speech as reference but you should not be reading your speech to the audience. Be familiar with your 1report so that you can maintain eye contact.
