Jackson Literacy Events Plan--Secondary

Ongoing School Free tutoring for students every Wednesday.

Events

"Mystery Book"- Clues about a book are given each morning on the WGRS

morning show. Students will be given chances to guess the mystery book and

one correct elementary and one correct middle school guess will be drawn to

win a prize book. The winners will be announced on the Friday morning

show.

"GRS Staff Share"- Each morning, a different staff member will share a

quote or passage from their favorite book. Staff will also complete a survey

about their favorite childhood and current books that will be displayed in the

cafeteria.

"Caught Reading"- Students caught reading will have their pictures displayed

on the monitors during lunch.

-Administration will select students to read morning announcements over

PA system

Students can create a poster-size book cover or book mark to celebrate

literacy.

-Students can make book covers or book marks at home. The book covers

should be based on a favorite book and the bookmarks should promote

literacy, be based on book characters or stories. Finished book covers and

book marks must be given to English or reading teacher by Wednesday, January 27th and will be displayed by the front office on Thursday, January 28th. Awards for best overall display will be given.

Thanks for "popping in" tickets will be awarded to students who visit the

library and check out a book Monday-Thursday. Friday, during 7th period,

those students who've kept their tickets will be allowed to come have a bag of

popcorn.

"Caught Reading" awards--teachers will be given certificates and treats to

hand out to those students who are "caught reading" before school, at lunch,

during free time in class. These will be in your boxes on Friday.

Reading Marathon ? Favorite things to read post-its for the library windows.

Students/teachers will write down what they read during marathon and post it on the library windows. We can read for 20 minutes in 1st period.

"Drop Everything And Read"- Students will read for 30 uninterrupted minutes during the last period of the day.

Daily Book Trivia Reading Fair

Read-A-Thon ? Students will pay $1.00 per period to read in the library for the period. The money will be used to purchase books for the library. "Favorite Character Day"- Students will be allowed to dress as their favorite book Civic Responsibility ? How are you going to help promote literacy in our community? Work with the public library to develop a schedule for volunteer tutors once a week. We will also have a literacy poster contest for Riverside students. MHS students will judge the best posters and the winning class will have a guest high school reader visit. There will be a winner for each grade.

"Bookmark Swap"- Students in Middle School will design bookmarks during their Language Arts class period to give to Elementary students in the library.

Reading Makes Cents Students can donate $0.50 or more to wear a CHS t shirt/shirt. All donations will go to the library for the purchase of more books. Reading Prizes Students will be called to the library throughout the day to pick a prize for the top performances in AR so far this year. Prizes will be awarded in MS and HS based on most words read, highest overall averages in Thursday: Tell a joke Thursday ? Students will write down their funniest jokes, and post them on a poster in the hallway to be read. "Library Amnesty Day"- Book fines for lost books from GRS will be 50% off! (Students who owe to SES will not be able to use this promotion.) Throw Back Thursday: Vocabulary Parade Rules from Elementary Students can dress up to show the meaning of a vocabulary word, just like the old days at CES. The student must have a sign displaying the word in which they are portraying and the word must be appropriate for school. Display Day--Student created book marks and book covers will be displayed by the front office. Awards will be given for best overall bookmark/book

Best Read T-shirts ? Students can wear t-shirts with funny sayings on them. Sayings must be appropriate for school.

"Reading Rocks! Wear Funky Socks!"- Students (and staff) will wear funky socks to celebrate how much reading rocks!
