| |This workshop will be delivered through a combination of lectures and round-table |

| |discussions. |

|Objectives |The general objective of this course is to contribute to institutional capacity building |

| |on WTO-related issues in academic institutions, with a view to enhancing national |

| |training, teaching and research capacities on these matters with scholars from Central |

| |and Eastern Europe, Central and the Caucasus. |

| | |

| |This workshop seeks to strengthen a regional network of academics and to identify a core |

| |group of scholars with whom the WTO Secretariat is expected to jointly deliver a |

| |one-month Short Regional Trade Policy Course for Government Officials, in cooperation |

| |with the International Development Law (IDLO), to take place in Roma on 04-29 October |

| |2010. |

| |At the end of the event, participants are expected to be more familiar with WTO |

| |negotiations and the specificities of WTO Agreements, the functioning of the WTO, and |

| |trade-policy issues of regional interest. |

The current global economic crisis has brought to the front several aspects related to trade, including trade finance contraction, the threat of protectionism, and the potential for trade-distortive measures as part of economic stimulus packages, among other issues. What is the current global evaluation of the crisis and what are the perspectives for recovery, and what is the contribution of trade to the recovery?

Challenges remain for an economic analysis of the impact of the crisis and of the repercussions of government responses to it. What is role does the WTO play in the current context? What role does the WTO Monitoring Mechanism plays, what are its benefits and limitations?

The WTO and the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) will partner for the delivery of a Short Regional Trade Policy Course for trade officials, to take place on 4 – 25 October 2010. IDLO's training of trainers programme provides professionals with practical tools and techniques to maximize the impact of training programs in their areas of competence.

This session will focus on training skills for adult learners in the field of trade and on the definition and structuring of jointly delivered training sessions. A group of participants and WTO staff counterparts will be invited to develop modules to be possibly delivered jointly in the future.
