3752850114300News from 3rd GradeBy Mrs. BevisOctobrer 2019Hello October! We had a great first month of school. STudents have become accustomed to our classroom routines and continue to rise to every expectation. I am proud to be their teacher! Thank you to those who were able to come to Link to Learning night on September 19. If you were unable to attend, I sent home information about our new Literacy program and the presentation is on the Weebly. LiteracyWe are finishing the second unit of our first module in the EL Literacy program, “Overcoming Learning Challenges Near and Far.” Unit 2 focuses on nonfiction close reading and writing an informative paragraph. Some of the books we are using include: More Than Anything Else by Marie Bradby, Waiting for the Biblioburro by Monica Brown, Thank You, Mr. Falker by Patricia Polacco, Rain School by James Rumford, Nasreen’s Secret School by Jeanette Winter, and My Librarian Is a Camel by Margriet Ruurs. In this module, we will work on phonics and word recognition and use of prefixes and suffixes, build vocabulary, compose an informative paragraph on the challenges of accessing books, and demonstrate informative writing by creating a reading strategies bookmark. All students are expected to read 150 minutes weekly at home. You and your child should create an at-home reading schedule that works for your family. Please sign the planner daily or by Friday for the total reading minutes. I have challenged the students to read at least 40 books this school year. The log for these books is in the binder. They are to turn it in when the challenge is completed. There is no due date. It is my hope that all students will accept the challenge. In the classroom we also access Epic!, Scholastic News, RAZ Kids, NewsELA, and Read Works. Students can access many of these at home as well as many resources on the CMS website through the student portal. Science We are finishing the lesson on volume and mass. Students are also learning how to fill in outlines in preparation for notetaking in upper grades. Social StudiesWe use Scholastic News to keep up with current events. There is an interactive website that students may also access at home. The password is Bevis3rdgrade. MathStudents continue to build their understanding of multiplication and division of whole numbers. We will then use patterns and apply properties and strategies to learn our multiplication facts through 10. Facts to be memorized will be assigned in chunks. So far we have memorized 0, 1, 2, 5, 10, (11 bonus).Caring Schools CommunityThus far we have celebrated 4 Spotlight Students: Patricia, Cyria, Jayden, and Jasmine. Rachael was selected as our first Terrific Kid of 3rd Grade! As part of our clubs program this year, Bain will have a Student Council. The students elected Claire to represent our class. Congratulations to all! Jot a note in the planner that you have read this newsletter so your child can earn a Bobcat Bucks bonus! ................
