| | |

|CONCEPT OR PRINCIPLE | |

Current electricity involves the flow of electrons, ions or holes around a circuit. Electrical energy is needed to maintain this flow of

electrons in order for various electrical appliances to function efficiently. It is necessary to conserve electrical energy to save the

limited reserves of fossil fuels and to ensure there is sufficient for the future generations.

|OBJECTIVES | |Classification |

|At the end of the lesson, student will be able to: | |

|Explain the importance of conserving energy for future generations. |Organisation(aff) |

|Explain the impact of wasting electrical energy on the limited reserves of fossil fuels. |Valuing (aff) |

|Co-operate in groups to create complete the activity in an informative and interesting manner. | |

| |Responding(aff) |

|PROCESS SKILLS | |

During the lesson, student will be engaged in:

Identifying/formulating a problem ?

Designing and Planning an experimental procedure ?

Setting up and executing experimental work ?

Observing and measuring ?

Recording of data and observations ?

Interpreting and evaluating data and observations ?

Communicating scientific ideas, observations and arguments ?

Applying scientific ideas and methods to solve qualitative and quantitative problems ?

Decision-making based on examination of evidence and arguments ?

Extracting from available information data relevant to a particular situation ?

|ACTIVITIES | |

Introduction:

T walks into classroom with the radio of her cell phone playing music very loudly.

T leaves music on and starts shouting to Ss to settle down.

Music stops suddenly because the phone battery runs down. The teacher needs to make a call to a co worker to bring her water from the staff

room but she has no phone. She is quite thirsty and tired after the shouting and the staff room is a distance away.

T asks class, “Friends, please tell me what to do so I will not have to experience this discomfit again?”

Ss reply orally.

T.S “In today’s class we will be looking at conserving energy to prevent discomfort for ourselves and the future generations.”

Development:

Ss form 4 groups. Each group is assigned an activity.

Ss work on the activity.

Ss present their work to the class.

Ss & T discuss.

T.S “We will now review what we learnt today.”

Consolidation:

T explains the scenario.

Ss write their opinion in their notebooks.

T asks Ss at random to share their work orally.

Ss asked to summarize.

B.S. “In our next class we will look at circuit diagrams.”

ACTIVITY – ONE PER GROUP. Any method can be chosen to share your ideas .e. g skit, essay, poem, song, chart, dialogue, etc.

1) You recently built your own house and you are about to go to the hardware to buy bulbs. Your wife thinks you should buy the filament lamps because it is cheaper and it works well. However, you think the most appropriate thing to do is purchase the fluorescent bulbs. What can you say or do to convince your wife that those fluorescent lamps are the better deal for you, your country and the future generations.

2) Imagine you are a single parent with two kids. One of your children insists the air condition, television and fan have to be ‘on’ in order for her to fall asleep. Discuss the need for reducing wastage of electrical energy and the means of doing so.

3) You finally got a permanent job and you decided to take a loan to buy a car. You would like to get the new Toyota Prius with the solar sunroof but, your parents think you should buy a normal, cheaper vehicle like a corolla or altis. How would you convince your parents that your choice will conserve energy for future generation?

4) On receiving your electricity bill one day you realise that you were wasting a lot of electrical energy by having your computer on all day and night although it was not in use. Discuss how this habit affects the limited reserves of fossil fuels and ways we can conserve it.

ASSESSMENT

In your same group discuss the following for 5 minutes and then we will discuss our opinions with the class.

You read in a magazine “Refrigerators and air conditioned rooms should be well sealed so that less energy can enter from the environment and hence less energy is needed for cooling. As responsible individuals please turn off all air conditioned units when not in use over a long period of time.”

You are about to air condition your home what will you do to ensure you conserve energy. How will your action benefit the future generation and the environment? Explain how the advice given to reduces the wasting electrical energy.
