School Wellness and Physical Education – Somerset Academy Silver Palms Charter Many goals were accomplished during the school year of 2015/16, and for the PE department, one of the goals reached was students passing the Fitnessgram Test. This test is implemented every school year and is done as a pre-test and post-test to measure student fitness’ improvements. Each teacher is required to test every student in physical education and report the test scores to Miami-Dade County head of PE Department, Dr. Jayne Greenberg. These results are compared to other students within the United States to measure health and physical fitness. Last year as a whole, we scored a 78% passing rate from all our students enrolled in PE. We achieved our goals of getting kids in shape and students made gains throughout the year, comparing pre and post test scores.Miami Marathon – Kids Run MiamiKids Run Miami is a privately-funded, county-wide program that invites all middle schools in Miami-Dade County to establish a consistent running program as part of their physical education daily lesson plans. Our school will participate in this event and our students will run 25 miles over 15 weeks culminating with the?Miami Marathon (January 24, 2016) on the final 1.2 miles of the marathon course. Students were given the opportunity to run together in a safe setting on the same course used by 25,000 marathoners in Downtown Miami. Students began the program running one?mile a week and gradually increase their running regimen to 2.5 miles per week. Students gained mileage during PE classes as a daily warm-up routine.center206375000It is the goal of the Kids Run Miami program to involve as many children as possible from start to finish. Recent research by the Center for Disease Control has found that middle school and high school students are those at highest risk of becoming sedentary and overweight, increasing the risk of Type 2 diabetes, heart disease?and high blood pressure. This program helps reduce such risks by promoting physical education and active lifestyles through running. Because physical education classes are already part of the regular curriculum, the Kids Run Miami program compliments our PE classes without changing class schedules or times.School Sports Program – AthleticsThe mission of Somerset Academy’s Athletics Department is to provide student-athletes with an opportunity to compete successfully in a wide range of sports.
