Mrs. Bradley’s Weekly News

January 19-23, 2009

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Inauguration Week!!! Last week we began to review the lives and accomplishments of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We will be talking about the historical significance of Obama’s road to the White House, along with Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream for our country.

This week will be our last week to review before we take our Richmond Public Schools Nine-Weeks test. Unfortunately, I will not be at school this week. I will be at home in Pennsylvania to attend my grandfather’s funeral. Thank you in advance for your understanding.

As the weather continues to decline (and as I am wishing for snow) please keep in mind that we will be going outside to recess as long as it is not pouring down rain! We need our daily exercise and fresh air. So, please be sure that you are sending your child to school with gloves/mittens, a scarf, and a warm coat. The playground has been very muddy recently. We have had daily discussions about staying away from puddles…but some friends continue to be intrigued by the mud. Please talk with your son/daughter at home about staying away from the mud!!!!!!

Here’s what we are up to this week:

In Language Arts we will be reading the story “The Great Ball Game.” This is a Native American folktale. We will also talk about ways to research facts about animals. We will also be reading biographies about Susan B. Anthony and Helen Keller.

In Mathematics we will continue our unit on addition with regrouping. The students will estimate the sum of two whole numbers whose sum is 99 or less and recognize whether the estimation is reasonable.

We will talk about various strategies for addition with regrouping. Some strategies include using base ten blocks, using a number line, hundreds chart, pencil and paper methods, and mental math. It is especially important that your child knows his/her basic facts to 20 with speed and accuracy. Spend time practicing this skill this week!

In Science we will begin our unit on matter. During this unit, the student will investigate and understand basic properties of solids, liquids, and gases.

Reminders…

Boys, please bring a dry snack to share with the class for the month of January.
