Welcome! I am so very excited to welcome you and your child to our virtual second grade! It will be a different year but together we got this! There are many exciting things planned. Communication between home and school is very important and helps to make the year much smoother for your child. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. To get in touch with me please email me at mengel@.

Transportation

If your child’s usual transportation changes, as we, (when possible) transition to traditional learning or hybrid, it is necessary that I have a note or email telling me about the change. Please send all emails to me by 3:00. If I do not respond, please contact the office so they may announce this change at dismissal. Your child’s safety is of the utmost importance to me. All the car riders will be escorted out the gym doors and loaded into the cars in the car line.

Homework

There will be no homework during virtual learning. Kids are encouraged to play outside, read for pleasure, and take part in family and wellness activities.

Supplies

The list of elementary supplies will be on the Kutz website.

When students come back to school, we will send home a second supply list, so they have what they need in the building to succeed.

Snack

The children will enjoy a small snack, a lunch break, and recess each day.

Birthdays

Each child will have a chance to celebrate his/her birthday at school through our virtual Team’s Chat on their special day!

Writing

We will start the year off by building a community of writers. Our types of writing will include personal narratives, informative pieces, and opinion pieces. We will also write friendly letters, poetry, and fictional pieces. We will be spending a lot of time this year trying to write complete descriptive sentences and paragraphs in these pieces. The kids will concentrate on: forming letters correctly, writing legibly, leaving spaces between words, starting sentences with capitals, and ending sentences with a mark of punctuation.

Reading/Phonics

This year we are implementing Reading Horizons, a research -based program that uses multi-sensory strategies to help students learn the rules and patterns of English language-leading to high accuracy in reading, spelling, and pronunciation. Students will spend a portion of their reading block engaging in daily phonics-based activities.

Our reading theme set back in June is “Get Ready! Get Set! Read!” Please send in your child’s summer reading challenge sheet that they received at the end of 1st grade. They should have a log of at least 10 books read over the summer with one book recommendation. Mrs. Vilbas has asked that parents email her their book logs at bvilbas@

Reading daily is a great way to help your child become a better reader.

Math

In September, we will continue to implement the Math In Focus Program! These resources are the U.S. edition of Singapore’s most widely used curriculum, bringing Singapore’s effective approach to mathematics instruction to U.S. classrooms.  Math in Focus® is based on the curriculum and pedagogy in Singapore which emphasizes problem solving and positive attitudes toward mathematics, while focusing on student development of skills, concepts, process and metacognition. Your child will develop conceptual understanding through the use of the CPA (concrete-pictorial -abstract) approach.  He/she will also develop problem solving skills through exposure to numerous embedded problem-solving situations.

Knowing addition and subtraction facts automatically will really help your child with future skills.

Science/Social Studies

During the year, we will be working on Social Studies Units of: Communities, Geography, Economics, and Native Americans. Our Science Units will cover: Sound, Rocks and Minerals, and Habitats.

Specials

As soon as our specialist schedule is complete, I will let you know the schedule.

Thanks for your support! Looking forward to a different but awesome year!!!!! Together, we got this!!

Fondly,

Michele Engel
