Message from the President

For so many, Holy Ghost Prep continues to be a Second Home

On a recent visit outside the United States, a fellow traveler approached me with the enthusiastic greeting, "A Philadelphian!" It is only a guess that my accent gave it away! There is a distinction - and a proud one - not only in our food, our history, our industry and accomplishments - but even in our manner of speech. It is a recognizable sign of our identity. It points to where we belong, from whence we came, and even, in some instances, to the way in which we see the world.

There are now generations of young men for whom a diploma from Holy Ghost Prep is a source of singular pride. They are classics scholars, architects, leaders of business and government, and priests. They are scattered throughout the world, in places and occupations they never imagined as teenagers. They are young and old, married and single, famous and happily modest. And they share a pride in their alma mater that is both fierce and humbling. Holy Ghost Prep was a second home to so many of us. It was a place where beloved teachers discussed books with us that influenced our life decisions, professional and personal. We formed friendships there that we carry forever. And we learned deep goodness, respect, and integrity of life. We are marked by the institution ? and we belong there in the most profound ways.

When someone meets a graduate of Holy Ghost Prep, the accent may not be immediately recognizable, but the quality of soul surely is! To the members of the Holy Ghost Prep's Parent organizations, the Mothers' Guild and Fathers' Association, Alumni and Alumni Parents, faculty, staff, and friends of Holy Ghost Prep, thank you for all that you do and have done for this remarkable institution.

In One Heart and One Mind,

Father James P. McCloskey, C.S.Sp. `70 President

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Tony Geonnotti `76 New Trustee Chair

Tony Geonnotti `76

HGP Taps Tony Geonnotti '76 As Trustee Chair

Tony Geonnotti, a proud 1976 graduate of Holy Ghost Prep, was installed as Chair of the HGP Board of Trustees at the start of the School's current fiscal year, replacing Sister Mary Dacey, whose term expired June 30.

The father of three other Holy Ghost alums, as well as a daughter who attended Archbishop Wood, Geonnotti also recently began a second three-year term on the Board. Most recently, he has chaired the Enrollment Committee. Since September of 2013, he is employed as Director of Sales for Apex Contractors, LLC, a position he assumed following eight years in a variety of positions at DeLuca Homes, including three years as Director of Operations.

"Holy Ghost has been, and will continue to be a significant part of my life," said Geonnotti. "In all honesty, I have never actually left HGP since graduating in 1976. The solid moral foundation and Christian

character that I gained during my association with the School ? first as a student and later in various positions of leadership ? successfully prepared me professionally and personally."

As head of the governing body that is charged with charting and managing the direction and growth of Holy Ghost Prep in today's competitive academic and economic climate, he takes a comprehensive approach to his new duties. "The most important thing I will endeavor to accomplish as Trustee Chair is to preserve and enhance the quality, reputation and core values that shape Holy Ghost Prep," he asserts. "We cannot sacrifice the Spiritan traditions that the School represents, as well as the quality of the preparation HGP's young men receive before being sent out into the world each year."

"I am fortunate to be associated with a group of Trustees, school leaders, faculty and staff that share so much of their time, talent and treasures to ensure

the health and vitality of Holy Ghost Prep for years to come."

Almost routinely, Geonnotti recalls the difference his own student experience has made on his life to this day. "For years after graduation, I was still able to walk through the doors of Cornwells and always found teachers, coaches and support staff who welcomed me with open arms and provided me with advice that has served me well, I believe, to this day," he reflects. "One Heart and One Mind rings through each and every hall and in every classroom of the School ? and everyone associated with Holy Ghost Prep has had an influence on my life and on what I have become ? and for me that has made all the difference."

Tony and wife Cynthia, who reside in Langhorne, PA, are the parents of a daughter, Kristina Lynn, as well as sons Anthony `99, Justin `04, and Alexander `08.

DONORS & SCHOLARS PRESIDENT'S RECEPTION

HGP Reception Celebrates Private Support for Student Scholarships

Nearly a hundred members of the Holy Ghost Prep community joined together in Founders' Hall on October 30 as the School recognized private philanthropic support at the inaugural President's Reception for Donors and Scholars. Among the students in attendance were recipients of many of the funds made possible by generous private contributions from alumni, parents, faculty and friends. For most, it was a first-time opportunity for donors to meet current HGP students who have benefitted most from charitable giving. To consider or to make a gift in support of the Holy Ghost Fund, which largely underwrites scholarship needs, contact Alexis Gettings, Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Engagement, at 215-639-2102, ext. 204 or via email (agettings@). Currently, approximately one-third of HGP students receive some form of scholarship funding, amounting in grants in excess of $1 million.

"You have made it possible for me to attend HGP, an opportunity that otherwise may not have been probable without your generosity. I look forward to giving back to the school/community so other boys like me can have a chance."

? Zamir Guy `18 Spiritan Scholarship Fund recipient

"I sincerely thank you for your generosity. I will continue to do my best to uphold the values of Holy Ghost Prep."

? Tyler Joyce `16 Father McGovern Scholarship recipient

"Without your help, I would not be able to attend such an excellent school. I, along with many others, greatly appreciate all you have done."

? Alex Deola `16 Spiritan Scholarship Fund recipient

"This scholarship helped me know and realize that Holy Ghost Prep is the school for me."

? John Wisniewski `17 Anthony Marchione Music Scholarship recipient

"I truly believe that it was Holy Ghost Prep and the principles behind its teaching and guidance that gave me the tools to uphold the ideals of the Thomas F. Flynn Memorial Scholarship."

? Ryan Malloy `15 Thomas F. Flynn Memorial Scholarship recipient

Joaquin Olivar `15 was among the three recipients of the Anthony Marchione Music Scholarship who performed for attendees. Others included Noah Tapp `17 and Willdragon Wang `18.

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT OF HOLY GHOST PREP...

McMullen Family Honored for Lead Gift In support of Student Lounge Renovation

Holy Ghost Preparatory School honored Diane and Jeffrey McMullen of Newtown, PA, in recognition of their lead gift that aided an extensive renovation of the HGP Student Lounge, a space which dates back to the completed construction of the school in 1910. The room was originally called the "Trunk Room" because it housed the luggage of students who attended Holy Ghost Prep when it was a seminary for approximately a half century. Over the years, the space has become the student locker room and was transformed into a lounge space thanks to the McMullen's gift.

Holy Ghost Prep's Mothers' Guild presented HGP with a gift of $25,000 at its annual Christmas Dinner on December 1 from proceeds realized from its annual Craft Show, held November 8-9. At the Mothers' Guild direction, the funds will be dedicated in support of the installation of a new lighted sidewalk, as well as additional pedestrian safety measures.

"This will help ensure a safe passage between the current school buildings and the new Bounds property across the street," noted Mothers' Guild President Mary Creekmore. Millie Palermo, Mary Beth McFadden and Sharon Patrick served as tri-chairs for the 2014 Craft Show, which realized approximately $37,000 in net proceeds.

FOCUS ON VOLUNTEERS

"IN THEIR OWN WORDS"

Larry Scheetz `98

Larry Scheetz `98 to Lead Alumni Board of Directors

Lawrence "Larry" Scheetz, a 1998 Holy Ghost Prep graduate who is among the charter group of alumni who have helped to spearhead the HGP Alumni Board since its founding three years ago, was appointed to head the Alumni Association Board of Directors.

In making the announcement, HGP Executive Director of Advancement Peter Manetas noted Scheetz' active participation and leadership in recent months as a steering committee met to expand the Alumni Board's role among the School's alumni base of approximately 4000 graduates. Dating back to his own scholastic days at Holy Ghost Prep, Larry has exhibited a kind of leadership and collaborative approach to his volunteer role that accentuates service.

"I know everyone at Holy Ghost joins me in expressing our profound appreciation for the leadership and service provided to the Alumni Board the past two years by Grant Holdren `99 and Rob Keddie `87, who served as co-chairs and helped direct efforts among fellow graduates to provide greater support for the School," said Scheetz. "Their guidance and input have proven invaluable to me and to others."

"I had a phenomenal HGP experience," said Scheetz. "The students, teachers, coaches and staff created a safe and supportive environment which permitted each of us to take chances and excel as students and as young men. This sense of community and friendships at Holy Ghost allowed me to focus on my school work, athletics and service."

"My personal goal for the Holy Ghost Prep Alumni Association is to increase alumni giving participation while recreating a sense of pride and community that we all experienced during our years at Holy Ghost."

Scheetz, who along with wife Kathleen and twins Madelyn and Lawrence III (born last May 24) , reside in Doylestown, PA, is owner/partner of the Law Offices of Williams & Scheetz of Richboro, PA, a community-based law practice that offers comprehensive services to clients. Prior to joining his current firm, he was an associate with Brinker Biddle & Reath LLP of Philadelphia.

8 HGP ADVANCEMENT NEWS, WINTER 2014-15

Inducted into the Holy Ghost Prep Athletics Hall of Fame on January 31st, 2015 as a multi-sport student-athlete, Scheetz holds a BA from Bucknell University, where he graduated Cum Laude in 2002, as well as a J.D. from Temple University in 2007.

Named a 2014 Bucks County "Forty Under 40" awardee, Scheetz was recognized among those in the county who have distinguished themselves early in their careers in business, education and community service. Also this year, he was named a Pennsylvania Rising Star in personal injury litigation, a recognition reserved for the top 2.5 percent of up-and-coming lawyers in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

He is the son of Lawrence and Mary Scheetz of Newtown, PA and works alongside his father at the Richboro firm that carries the family name.

In assuming his role as President of the Holy Ghost Prep Alumni Board and Alumni Association, Larry Scheetz has identified four goals that will prove prominent in shaping HGP Alumni community relationships.

"I see our mission, in large part, to cultivate a closeknit and genuine relationship between Holy Ghost Prep and its alumni in `One Heart and One Mind," he noted. Scheetz added that the Alumni Association seeks to foster pride, loyalty, and a life-long connection to Holy Ghost by:

Coordinating programs and events for alumni, students, parents and friends of HGP

Encouraging alumni to contribute their time, talent and financial support

Communicating the needs, news and accomplishments of Holy Ghost Prep and its alumni

Providing opportunities for volunteerism, professional association, career development and fellowship among alumni
