Papier Mache Recipes:STANDARD RECIPE (to cover 3 - 4 balloons):Benefits: cheapest recipe possible, dries relatively fast (48 hours max)Detriments: sculpture will not be waterproof, end result is ‘milky’ looking (not good for use with string / twine wrapping, end result must be painted2 cups flour1 tablespoon salt (helps to avoid mildew while drying)Add water until the mixture looks like thick pancake batterBlend with a hand mixer for smoothest whipped consistency (eliminate clumps)MIXED RECIPE (to cover 4 – 6 balloons):Benefits: strongest bondDetriments: sculpture will be partially waterproof2 cups flour1 cup white glue or PVA or matte podge1 tablespoon saltAdd water until the mixture looks like thick pancake batterBlend with a hand mixer for smoothest whipped consistency (eliminate clumps)ALTERNATE RECIPEBenefits: dries completely clear (best for use with fancy papers, decoupage, patterned fabrics or string or twine)Detriments: sculpture will be partially waterproof2 cups of matte podgeAPPLICATION TIPS:When using paper, tear into small pieces or strips (rather than cutting with scissors). Torn, rough edges will stick down flatter than cleanly cut ones. Pieces should be between 1” X 1” and 2” X 2”.When using fabric, tear into 2” strips and then cut strips into pieces. 100% cotton works best for fabric mache.Dip piece of fabric or paper into the mixture, and using two fingers, pinch the fabric or paper to squeegee it off before applying to the balloon. Smooth each piece down, squishing out any liquid from underneath the fabric/paper. Pieces should not be sopping or dripping wet with the mixture, or they will not adhere properly. Overlap pieces at least ?” in order to make sure the piece stays strong.For strongest bond, allow the piece to dry between layers – 2 or 3 layers is best – with time to dry in between. Alternatively, layers can be applied one immediately after another, however it is more challenging to create even coats. ................
