MEDIA AND SPORTS ARE TOP SOCIAL BRANDS

SOCIAL VIDEO ACTIVITY ON THE RISE

People are using social media more and more—and interacting more and more to talk about brands that they care about. According to Shareablee, social media engagement increased 35% in 2015 compared to 2014. That was boosted in part by a 73% increase in social video posts as brands well beyond the TV and media world posted their own videos seeking engagement with their customers on social media.

Shareablee tracked a 111% growth in social video actions across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram in 2015. U.S. brands captured a total of 79.7 billion social actions, with Instagram leading in engagement.

Among the top brands interacting via social media, National Geographic dominates Shareablee’s Top 25 rankings with 1.6 billion total actions (likes, comments, shares, retweets, favorites, dislikes) across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. However, engagement from video postings on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (YouTube is exclusively video) was low for Nat Geo at only 2%.

Sports leagues claimed the next two spots. The NBA garnered 819.1 million social actions online in 2015 and 36% of its fan engagement came from video posts. The NFL, in third place, was very different—with 528.9 million social media actions, but only 2% video engagement. The faux sports/entertainment brand WWE scored a hefty 385.9 million actions and an impressive 23% video engagement. Rounding out the top five was Victoria’s Secret, with 330.7 million actions and 9% video engagement.

MTV scored the highest of any TV network, claiming 6th place at 259.4 million actions and 13% video engagement. Fox News Channel (FNC) was right behind at 241.3 million actions and 18% video engagement.

By social media platform, FNC was the #1 brand overall on Facebook, with 228 actions, followed by WWE at 218.3 million and FOX Deportes 154.4 million. Bleacher Report (owned by Turner Broadcasting) topped Twitter at 20.6 million actions, followed by the NFL—also rounding to 20.6 million—and Billboard 20.1 million. National Geographic topped Instagram at 1.5 billion actions, followed by the NBA at 664.9 million and the NFL 416.4 million.

Entertainment brands dominated social media activity at 35.3 billion actions, with Media at 25.2 billion. Sports was well back in third place at 9.1 billion. Retail brands had 5.2 billion social media interactions and Consumer Packaged Goods 1.5 billion. The fastest growing sectors were Education, Business Services and Automotive.

FOOTBALL FANS READY TO PARTY

A survey by Market Track finds that fans across the country have already committed to spending more this year than in previous years on their Super Bowl parties. The survey reveals that approximately 22% of the nation’s 123 million households will host a party for Super Bowl 50. Of that group, 58% indicated that they plan on spending more on food and supplies this year than they did for Super Bowl XLIX. By comparison, only 10% of hosts plan on spending less than the year before.

While the majority of individuals plan to spend more on their party than the year before, less than 10% of all those surveyed plan on purchasing a new TV in advance of the game. However, 17% of millennials indicated they would purchase a new TV for the big game, reinforcing the reported trend of that demographic group’s investment in items for their homes.

“Super Bowl Sunday is the first major retail and sales event following the holiday season, so it is usually an early indicator of how the retail sector will fare for the year,” said Traci Gregorski, senior vice president of marketing at Market Track.

In a breakdown by age, Market Track’s research has shown that young, wealthy consumers are the main demographic hosting Super Bowl parties this year, with 30% of millennials and 28% of those making more than $100,000 planning a party. Regardless of demographic, 74% of consumers will be watching the highly anticipated commercials that air during the CBS broadcast.
