Fall 2008

Greetings

Hello! I would like to welcome everybody to another exciting season of high soccer in the Miami Valley. This is probably the best way to get all of the information to the coaches within the association. The purpose of this letter is to give you the important dates and information pertaining to MVSSCA and high school soccer.

Dues

All dues are to be paid to Bob Ellis, Treasurer, no later than August 24, 2008. If the dues are not paid on time, your players will not be eligible for any All Area and All State Awards. Any questions concerning dues and membership must be directed to Bob. The national dues have been raised to 65 dollars and we will be locked in the same rate for three years. In April, the OSSCA board has voted to absorb five dollars for the national dues for 2008 only. However, under the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association (OSSCA) bylaws, the head coach must be a member of the local, state, and national associations. Check with your application for the breakdown of the dues.

Assistant Coaches Can Join the State Association for Free in 2008

The OSSCA has decided to allow all assistant coaches to the OSSCA for FREE. Assistant coaches will need to join the MVSSCA to receive the benefit and it is optional if they want to join the NSCAA.

Bob Ellis is the newest inductee to the OSSCA Hall of Fame

Bob Ellis, Alter Boys Coach, MVSSCA and OSSCA treasurer, was inducted into the OSSCA Hall of Fame in December for his years of service as a treasurer for both associations and as a coach for the Alter Men’s Soccer team. His dedication and hard work have helped made these two associations operate on a professional level. Congratulations, Bob!

Mentor Coach

This year, with major turnover of coaches, I have created mentor coaching positions. This is a non-officer position. The purpose of the mentor coach is offer guidance to new coaches within the local association. The mentor will provide help in securing membership, tournament draw and all area selection. There will be one mentor coach per gender. The mentor coach for boys will be Bob Hamlin from Bethel and for girls will be Jennifer Burnside from Lemon Monroe. These individuals as well as myself will be available to answer any questions.

Seed Meeting and MVSSCA meeting

The next MVSSCA meeting will be held on Sunday October 5, 2008 3pm. The site will be announced later. Please confirm with your Athletic Director, The Southwest District Athletic Board website () and local website () about the date and time of the draw. The seeding procedure will be very much the same as last year. Coaches will be posting their comments online rather than emailing the SWDAB webmaster. The All Star packet will be handed out at this time.

Ron Pinsenschaum and Kim Mahoney Respect the Game Award

I would strongly encourage the members from the MVSSCA to seek these candidates and nominate them every year. Over the past few years, I have not received any nominations for the award. The criteria for the awards are posted on the OSSCA website and will be included in the All Star packet.

Miami Valley Top Ten

The local poll will be opened the first week of the regular season, week of August 18. The poll will close every Sunday night at midnight. On Monday morning, the results will be tabulated and sent to the local newspapers. If you have lost your login id and/or password, please email the webmaster webmaster@. All head coaches will be given the opportunities to vote. This will help our Miami Valley state poll reps with nominating teams for the state top ten poll. Also, we will need help with monitoring the Miami Valley poll. We are looking for people to help send reminders and answer questions about our top ten poll.

All State Selection

In April, the OSSCA voted to overhaul the format for All State selection this year. There will be only two teams per division and gender. 18 players will make up the 1st team and the remaining 36 players will be placed on 2nd team. The results of the voting will be tabulated by the OSSCA board. All information will be kept confidential until the All State teams are released during the weekend of state finals.

OSSCA Website

OSSCA website will be absorbing information from all the district websites (scores, stats and other information at the discretion of each district). If you call the Dayton Daily News and/or the Springfield News Sun, your score will be listed on the local and state website. Coaches will be able to submit scores and assign goals, assists, and other stats.  The OSSCA website is designed to be an all-inclusive source of information and a centralized site for entire state.  Be sure to send your schedule to schedules@. MVSSCA website is now part of the OSSCA website. On the OSSCA website, click on ‘Miami Valley’ on the left side of the page.

SWDAB meeting

Bob Eakins, Don Skelton and I met with the board in January to discuss some of our concerns. We have discussed the cross-bracket, site selection, match times and timing of the tournament draw letter. The SWDAB board has stated that the letter will be mailed to the school’s Athletic Director two weeks prior to the tournament draw. If you did not receive a letter at that time, contact your tournament manager. The tournament manager info will be located on the SWDAB website (). The SWDAB will take recommendations for hosting sites for the District Semifinals and Finals. If your school is interested in hosting an event, please send me an email. I want to have a list to send to SWDAB in January 2009.

2nd Vice President, All Star Game

Currently, the position of 2nd Vice President, All Star Game is open. We will need to fill this position for this fall. The responsibilities of this position will be organizing and directing the All Star game. We will vote on this position in the October meeting. If anybody is interested, please send me an email.
