The YMCA of Metropolitan Washington Celebrates Martin Luther King’s Holiday with a Week of Service, Jan. 18-25

Y: Cares initiative shows appreciation of COVID-19 essential workers across the DMV

WASHINGTON, Jan. 18, 2021 – In its continuation to serve the community, the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington will commemorate the Martin Luther King’s Holiday with a week-long community service project to thank COVID-19 essential works for their services during the pandemic. Y-Cares is the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington’s community response to help support neighbors in and around the Washington area.

Starting Monday, January 18, all YMCA of Metropolitan Washington branches and program centers will be collecting thank you cards from program participants, members and staff to show appreciation of our community frontline workers in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This “Y-Care” team will deliver these expressions of appreciation to essential workers in hospitals, schools, police departments, fire department and other services.

The community is invited to create a card or handwritten note, letter or simple thank you to an anonymous hospital worker or another of our local heroes on the front lines. Messages may be dropped in a drop box in the lobby of a local YMCA branch or program center or may be submitted via virtual message by sending to volunteers@ by Jan. 24. Cards and notes will be delivered on Jan. 25.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Washington area Y’s have provided a broad spectrum of community programs, services and support. This includes serving more than 146,209 pounds of meals and produce, which served 14,416 local families; providing daycare at four YMCA branches for the children of essential workers; hosting blood drives to help meet the urgent needs of area blood banks; providing daycare for families throughout the DMV area; in addition to providing online classes, the Y has its branches while adhering strictly to COVID-19 safety guidelines and restrictions in its areas.
