Crime Scene Papers

Procedure

1. Research how to properly process a crime scene

2. The major assignments, as well as corresponding general duties and responsibilities, are set forth as follows:

• Team Leader

• Photographer and Photographic Log Recorder

• Sketch Preparer

• Evidence Recorder

• Evidence Collector

• Notetaker

Description of each role

Note: You will be graded on the correctly completing your jobs in a timely manner.

Team Leader

1. Assume control - ensure safety of personnel and security at scene. Ensure personnel use appropriate protective equipment (gloves) and make sure they watch where they step so no evidence it lost.

2. Conduct initial walk-through for purposes of making a preliminary survey, evaluating potential evidence, and preparing a narrative description.

3. Take charge and make sure everyone is doing their job and doing it correctly.

4. Help group members when needed. For example, take measurements for sketch, hold the ruler for the photographer, or look up what evidence get stored in what type of bag.

5. Make sure that everyone has the supplies and equipment they need.

6. Make sure all the evidence is collected and labeled.

7. Make when the crime scene has been completely investigated that everything has been cleaned up.

Photographer and Photographic Log Recorder

1. Photograph entire area before it is entered.

2. Take photographs from the 4 points of the room.

3. Take photographs entering and leaving the Crime Scene.

4. Take midrange photographs of evidence in relation to other objects in the room.

5. Take examination quality photographs of each piece of evidence with a scale.

6. Photograph all fingerprints.

7. Prepare photographic log and delete any unneeded photos.

Sketch Preparer

1. Measure the perimeter of the scene.

2. Measure the height, width and length of any large object at the scene.

3. Select 2 fixed points to measure all evidence from.

4. Take dimensions of all pieces of evidence.

5. Triangulate every piece of evidence.

6. Have a legend on your Rough and Final Drawing

7. Find North and label it on your drawing.

8. Obtain appropriate assistance for taking measurements and double check measurements.

9. Make sure your final sketch is to scale.

10. Make sure your final sketch is neat, organized and can be seen clearly.

Notetaker

1. Record the number of the Crime Scene that you are investigating

2. Record the time and date

3. Assess what kinds of documentation are necessary to properly document the crime scene

4. Record the jobs of each individual person

5. Record the type of evidence and the number given to it.

6. Document observations within the crime scene, including the locations of persons and items within the crime scene and appearance and condition upon arrival.

7. Document conditions upon arrival (e.g., lights on/off, shades up/down, doors open/closed, windows open/closed, smells, liquids, weather, temperature, personal items.)

Evidence Recorder and Evidence Collector

1. Collect each piece of evidence

2. Describe evidence and its location on appropriate bag or envelope.

3. Sign and date evidence container/maintain chain of custody.

4. Maintain evidence log.

5. Use appropriate protective equipment (gloves)

Procedure: Processing of Crime Scene, Rough Drawing of Crime Scene, Final Drawing

1. Your team will have 1-2 day to process the crime scene

• This is NOT a lot of time! You have to be organized and be ready to go when your team meets at the backroom

• Show your team the place where the crime was committed.

• Do a walk through with your team

a. Identifying all relevant evidence that needs to be photographed and processed

• Team leader should take charge and make sure all jobs are performed in a timely manner helping out where he/she can

• Photographer identify the items you wish to photograph with Photo identification markers then take your pictures

a. Nothing should be touched until all pictures have been taken

b. If team members find evidence during processing they should make sure that the photographer gets a picture of it before anyone picks up and bags that evidence

c. Make sure each picture has a measurement tool (i.e. a ruler) included so the size of each piece of evidence is know in case it is lost or damaged

• As soon as your team has secured the crime scene the sketchers should get to work

a. First measuring the length and width of the taped area

b. Mark North on your sketch of the room.

c. Start measuring all evidence from the 2 fixed points being careful not to disturb it in anyway so photographers can take pictures of it and the evidence collectors can bag uncontaminated evidence

d. Measure the distance (in centimeters) from one of the objects to the first fixed point. Record the name of the object and its location and distance from the fixed points in Data Table 2.

e. Use squares or circles to represent the locations of different objects in the room. Draw larger objects with larger squares or circles. For example, a table should be larger than a chair.

f. Label each piece of physical evidence with a letter. At the bottom of the page, list each letter and describe the item it identifies.

g. Write the actual distances above the dashed lines on-the drawing. These are the same distances you recorded

• Evidence Recorder should document all important evidence in their log and then conference with their group members how to properly collect it.

a. Make sure that all evidence is documented in terms of appearance and position in the room

b.

c.

Documentation, Final Sketch, Reconstruction Paragraph

Final Sketch

• Use the "rough" sketch you made of the crime scene to draw a polished, final sketch. The final sketch will be used as evidence in a "trial."

• The final sketch should:

a. Be neatly drawn with black ink or marker on a piece of posterboard.

b. Be drawn to scale in your drawing, for example let 1 centimeter equal 40 centimeters of space in the room. In other words, if you measured the crime scene room to be 600 cm wide and 610 cm long, you would draw this room about 15 cm wide and a little more than 15 cm long.

c. Label North on the drawing.

d. Draw the squares and circles that represent physical evidence in proportion to each other. For instance, the female body should be drawn larger than the circle or square representing a knife; the tables should be larger than the body and the chairs, etc.

e. Have the lines from the two fixed points in proportion to the rest of the drawing. Remember your scale.

Reconstruction Paragraph

• Team members NOT involved in the final sketch preparation (determined by Team Leader) should be organizing photographs and coming up with a Crime Scene Reconstruction Essay based ONLY on the evidence you have. From the evidence you have what might have happened on the night in question? Where does your team go from here? Any promising leads?

Presentation

• On a day specified by your teacher you will have to present your findings using your final sketch, a projector for your photographs and your Crime Scene Reconstruction Essay

Note: You will be graded on the accuracy of your Crime Scene Reconstruction, your Final Sketch and your photographs

Directions: Type up the questions and answers to the following questions.

PostLab Questions

2. What types of information did you make sure that you had on your final sketch?

3. What was the most difficult aspect about working a crime scene?

4. Why did you have to make a final sketch?

5. What is the purpose of investigating a crime scene?
