Distribution of Neonatal Mortality, Liberia 2017 – 2018Godwina B. Williams1, B. Jacubs2, T.O.Yahbah3, and E. Dwalu4BackgroundGlobal neonatal deaths accounts for 46% of all under-five deaths. The leading causes of new born deaths are sepsis, preterm and birth asphyxia. Liberia’s annualized neonatal mortality rate is 10.6/100,000 live births. Liberia is among the countries that have achieved Millennium Development Goals with the proportion of under-five deaths occurring in the neonatal period in 2013 was estimated at 26%. The study objective were to determine the leading causes of neonatal deaths and identify counties with the highest neonatal mortality rate from 2017-2018. MethodsRecords of 1,382 children who died during their first 28 days of life were reviewed. Data was annualized by person place and time using Microsoft Excel compering counties with the highest neonatal deaths rate over the two years period.ResultOf the 1,382 records that were reviewed 2018 had the highest (818) counts as compared to 2017 (564). Sepsis 633 (46%) and birth asphyxia 488 (35.7) were among the 2 highest causes of neonatal mortality over the study period. Distribution among the 15 counties showed that Montserrado (570) had the highest count. The highest mortality rate per 100,000 live births were River Gee (36.8) and River Cess (8.1) Counties respectively. ConclusionNeonatal sepsis and birth asphyxia were the highest causes of neonatal deaths as it is among the 3 leading causes of neonatal deaths globally. Montserrado had the highest counts of cases as compared to River Gee and Rivercess Counties due to the high annual live births population. Counties with the highest mortality rate per 100,000 live births were Rivercess and River Gee Counties. Sepsis are the most common causes of neonatal deaths both at home and health facilities, therefore preventive measures are necessary to reduce new born deaths. ................
