Debate Format: Process, Guidelines & Rules___________________________________________________________________Debate Process & Guidelines: The outline below is the standard debate format we will follow for all class debates. Participants must adhere to the time limits & stop their arguments once directed by the moderator. The team delivering the initial argument each round is free to choose any argument from their team’s prep work & develop that argument to open each round. The rebuttal team should be active listening to the arguments made by the opposing side & direct their rebuttal response specifically to the arguments made by the opposing team.Debate Rules: The following debate rules will remain in effect & enforced by the moderator. Failure to comply with these rules will result in: a deduction in speaking time for your team, removal from the debate & a zero issued for the debate participation grade & potentially further disciplinary action, depending on the degree of the offense.RESPECT all student’s speaking time – only one team & speaker (holding the apple) may speak at a given time.RESPECT one another’s opinions, beliefs & perspectives, even if you passionately disagree with them. ZERO TOLERANCE for personal attacks or harassment based upon a student’s political viewpoints, religious/cultural beliefs, race, gender, sexual orientation, opinions, etc.RESPECT the debate process, spirit, guidelines & rules, as well as the moderator’s enforcement of those rules.DEBATE PROCEDURAL FORMATOPENING REMARKSFOR – Opening Statement (90 seconds)AGAINST – Opening Statement (90 seconds)UNDECIDED – Opening Statement (90 seconds)ROUND #1FOR – Argument #1 (90 seconds)AGAINST – Rebuttal Argument #1 (60 seconds)UNDECIDED – Commentary (60 seconds)ROUND #2AGAINST – Argument #2 (90 seconds)FOR – Rebuttal Argument #2 (60 seconds)UNDECIDED – Commentary (60 seconds)(Continued on back)ROUND #3FOR – Argument #3 (90 seconds)AGAINST – Rebuttal Argument #3 (60 seconds)UNDECIDED – Commentary (60 seconds)ROUND #4AGAINST – Argument #4 (90 seconds)FOR – Rebuttal Argument #4 (60 seconds)UNDECIDED – Commentary (60 seconds)ROUND #5FOR – Argument #5 (90 seconds)AGAINST – Rebuttal Argument #5 (60 seconds)UNDECIDED – Commentary (60 seconds)ROUND #6AGAINST – Argument #6 (90 seconds)FOR – Rebuttal Argument #6 (60 seconds)UNDECIDED – Commentary (60 seconds)CLOSING REMARKSAGAINST – (90 seconds)FOR – (90 seconds)UNDECIDED – (90 seconds) ................
