DESCRIBING SITUATIONS USING
For this pack
In addition to paper and pen you will need:-
a ruler
a strip of graph paper
a 1 litre measuring jug
Staff, please note, a brief visit to a supermarket is required. That part could be done as homework.
Exercise 1
On the strip of graph paper draw a line 5 cms long and mark it off in cms.
0 1 2 3 4 5
1. How many small squares are there to each cm?
2. How long is each small square?
This will help you write millimetres (mm) as decimals of a centimetre (cm).
3. Mark these measurements on your line, measuring from 0
a) at 6 mm
b) at 1 cm 3 mm
c) at 2 cm 7 mm
d) at 3 cm 1 mm
e) at 4 cm 5 mm
To write as a decimal fraction using cm just put a ( between the cm and mm
e.g. A is 0 cm 6 mm or 0·6 cm
4. Write the measurement for b, c, d & e as decimals.
You could use a calculator to change mm into decimal fractions using cm.
If you have 76 mm you divide by 10. That is 7.6 cm.
You divide by 10 because there are 10 mm in a cm.
5. a) Estimate the length and width of a sheet of paper in cm.
Measure the length and width of this sheet -
b) give your answer in cm.
c) give your answer in mm.
6. Change the following to cm
a) 25 mm b) 176 mm c) 3 mm d) 3721 mm e) 96 mm
7. Change these cm to m
a) 732620 cm b) 190 cm c) 1759 cm d) 81 cm e) 10234 cm
8. Change these metres (m) to kilometres (km)
a) 3620 m b) 927 m c) 1362 m d) 25 m e) 3 m
9. a) Estimate the length and width of your desk in cm.
Measure the length and width of your desk.
b) Give your answer in cm.
c) Give your answer in mm.
d) Give your answer in m.
Example
The length of my table is 170 cm and the width is 75 cm.
a) To convert these measurements to mm multiply by 10 because
1 cm = 10 mm
So the length is 170 cm × 10 = 1700 mm
and the width is 75 cm × 10 = 750 mm
b) To convert these measurements to metres divide the cm by 100 because
1 m = 100 cm
Length is 170 cm ( 100 = 1.7 m
Width is 75 cm ( 100 = 0.75 m

Remember
If you are converting a larger unit into smaller units then you multiply.
e.g. Metres into millimetres is ( multiply by 1000.
If you are converting smaller units into a larger unit – you divide
e.g. Centimetres into metres ( divide by 100
10. Convert the following into metres (m).
a) 2000 mm b) 1200 cm c) 5 Km
d) 10000 mm e) 80000 cm f) 70 Km
11. Convert the following into cm.
a) 20 mm b) 15 m c) 2 Km (hint first convert to m)
12. Convert the following into mm.
a) 5 cm b) 6 m c) 3 Km (hint first convert to m)
13. You need enough ribbon to decorate the hall which measure 13 m 29 cm by 10 m 15 cm.
a) Write 13 m 29 cm as a decimal fraction, using metres, then multiply by 2.
b) Write 10 m 15 cm as a decimal fraction, using metres, then multiply by 2.
c) Add the answers of (a) and (b) and express the result as a decimal fraction of a kilometre.
In question 5 you measured this page in mm and cm.
14. Write the cm measurements as decimal fractions of a metre (to 2 d.p.).
(Check the 'rule' if you've forgotten how.)
Exercise 2
Visit a local supermarket.
Check the quantities in various size bottles – some large, some medium and some small
Enjoy the break? Now for the work.
1. Write/express the quantities in the bottles as litres.
Remember if it is in ml divide by 1000
if it is in cl divide by 100
if it is in fluid ounces, forget it!
2. Change these millilitres (ml) to litres.
a) 1000 ml
b) 5276 ml
c) 2320 ml
d) 11 ml
e) 8 ml
3. Now look at the measuring jug.
a) If the jug is half full, how many ml does it contain?
b) Write/express that as a decimal fraction of a litre
c) How many ml are there if the jug is [pic] full?
d) Write/express that as a decimal fraction of a litre
You are having a party.
4. You need 10 bottles of red wine each containing 700 ml.
a) Write 700 ml as a decimal fraction of a litre.
b) Multiply 700 ml by 10 and write the answer as a decimal fraction, using litres.
You buy a further 6 bottles of white wine – each containing 700 ml
c) How many millilitres of white wine do you buy?
d) How many ml of wine do you buy in total?
e) How many litres do you buy in total?
Exercise 3
1. Weigh the following in grams using a set of kitchen scales
a) a book
b) a calculator
c) a tin of baked beans or something similar
d) a hammer
e) a personal stereo

d) a hammer
e) a personal stereo
3. Estimate the following weights in kilograms (kg)
a) your weight
b) a chair
c) a garden spade
d) a basket of laundry
e) a vacuum cleaner
Now check your answers using a set of bathroom scales (this question may have to be done at home).
4. Write/express the weight of these last items in grams (g)
a) your weight
b) a chair
c) a garden spade
d) a basket of laundry
e) a vacuum cleaner
A recipe needs
15 g sugar
15 g salt
25 g yeast
450 g flour
100 g margarine
5. What is the total weight of these ingredients in grams?
6. What is this as a decimal fraction of a kilogram?
7. You need to make twice the quantity. List the weight of ingredients that you will need (in grams).
___ g sugar
___ g salt

___ g flour
___ g margarine
8 Change these grams to kilograms (Kg)
a) 3892g
b) 500g
c) 12g
d) 6g
