ACTIVITY WRITE UP-DIY CANDY JAR Name of Activity: DIY Candy JarType of modalityCraft Activity/ Table ActivityType of playSolitaryInteraction patternExtra-Individual # of participants required1Equipment/supplies Mason Jar (cheaper alternatives: empty glass bottles), Burlap Ribbon, Jute Twine (alternative: recycled ribbons from Christmas Birthday presents, etc.), Gift Tag (For a more personalized gift tag, you can create your own by cutting your chosen paper into any shape you like and punching a hole on the side.), (You can also use old holiday cards or birthday cards) Gift Tissue Paper, Assorted Candies, Clear Tape, Scissors, Letter Stickers (alternative: Cutout letters from magazines/newspapers), Hole Puncher Facilities required/environmentFlat/Sturdy surface (tables, floor, etc.), good lighting, large area to accommodate all the materials neededPrecautionsAvoid any area that may shake the surface where the materials are positioned so the materials would not go missing. Be careful when working with the mason jar (or any bottle of glass) and as they make break and cause cuts. Carefully use the scissors and put them on the side when not in use. If candy has nuts as an ingredient, check first with person receiving your gift to make sure they are not allergicSequence/Directions (Details of how to move through the activity from start to finish): 1. Select an occasion that you would like the candy jar’s theme to be about. (For this activity, it is Halloween)2. Gather all the materials together and lay them on top of the table as organized as possible. This will be helpful during the activity as you would be able to reach every single material needed, making the process easier and faster.3. Wrap the burlap ribbon horizontally on the center body of the jar. Cut the burlap ribbon with a pair of scissors (just an inch bigger than the circumference of the jar) and tape it on the glass with a clear tape to make sure that the burlap ribbon does not fall off. You can also use a hot glue gun if you have one or double-sided tape so that you cannot see the tape.4. Cut a small piece (a circle slightly larger than the lid) of gift tissue paper and cover the lid of the jar. Make sure that all parts of the top part of the lid are covered with tissue paper Tape the gift tissue paper under the lid so the top part of it has nothing on top of it. 5. Think of a saying or phrases you would like to put on top of the lid. (In this activity, I have chosen “Trick or Treat”) 6. Peel the letter stickers and place them on top of the lid according to your chosen saying/phrases. Make sure that the letters are aligned neatly. 7. Take a gift tag and create a hole on the side with a hole puncher. Write a message on it as needed.8. Wrap the neck of the jar with jute twine 3 times and cut it with a pair of scissors (leaving enough twine hanging to that you can tie on a gift tag).9. Insert the jute twine in the hole of the gift tag and tie the jute twine in a ribbon to add a polished look.10. Put your chosen candies inside the jar and close the lid. The more options to choose from, the easier to come up with a design. -Watch a video that shows the directions of the activity or search some pictures of the DIY jar. Decrease the materials available. If there are less materials, there are less ways of decorating the jar. Thus, the participant would have to think more ways of utilizing the materials. PhysicallySelect very few decorative materials. For example, instead of having all the materials listed above, just use a mason jar, ribbons, scissors, and candies. Less materials, less steps. Select a design that requires a lot of details. The more details, the more physical work is needed.SociallyNAWork with your peers and share opinions and suggestions about your craft. Gather ideas to improve your craft. Other Comments: You can gather ideas from the internet regarding the design of your DIY project. Google Images, Pinterest, and You Tube are great resources for any craft activity. Make sure all your materials are available before starting the activity so you would not have to stop and continue later.
