Moon TownshipSustainability/Green Accolades and Achievements 2018 – 2020What have we accomplished so far in recent years?Achieved “GOLD” status through Sustainable Pennsylvania Community Certification Program.Placed third in small municipality category 2016-2017 Sustainable Pittsburgh Workplace ChallengePlaced first in medium municipality category 2017-2018 Sustainable Pittsburgh Workplace ChallengeReceived Recognition Award for Community Engagement – Sustainable Pittsburgh 2018.Implemented signed resolution and program for Tobacco Free Parks and playground as Tobacco-Free Zones – added signage to all parks.Received Tree City Recognition Award and implanted tree City resolution 2020Key Sustainability staff and EAC Board received Tree tender certification from Tree Pittsburgh 2019\Received Live Well Allegheny Recognition for Wellness and Community InitiativesImplemented and Installed New Moon Park Playground though DCNR Grant with focus on Natural and Native Species Landscaping 2019Designed and Installed Bioswales and Raingarden to manage storm water runoff and Improved accessibility with paved pathways.Hosted educational programs for Rain Barrels (2), Strom Water Run Off (LSS) and partnered with Hollow Oak Land Trust for workshop on Sustainable Lawn care through Allegheny Conservation District GrantImplemented a Moon Farmers’ Market to promote sustainable local agriculture and local business (now in 5th year with 35 vendors.After designation by Tree Pittsburgh as a Community having lost 10% of canopy through development – planted over 50 native species trees, 300 saplings, native shrubs and native plants in all parks.In partnership with Hollow Oak land trust – re-designed the old herb garden at robin hill park into a native species plant nursey with mason bees. In second year and producing plants which are transplanted in place of invasive plantsRe-developed Robin Hill circle garden with native species plants and fountainDesigned and implemented Robin Hill Fer de Lune Garden with Moon Garden Club and others adding Sensory garden, potting shed, native trees and shrubs, pollinator garden and herb/culinary garden.Instituted volunteer program with USDA to identify invasive insects such as lantern fly, Asian beetles and other species. Data and Collection -traps on going at two parks with USDACompleted an assessment of park trees in forested areas with DCNR forester. See attached report. Investigating deer management strategies to reduce deer-vehicle accidents and improve tree canopyPartnered with Barlett Tree Company to develop a park tree assessment (600 specimens) – implemented ABORSCOPE data management system,Developed volunteer program to reduce invasive vine species in all parks especially bittersweet and grape vine.Designed and planted a Meadow of wildflowers at Robin Hill Park with pollinators species.Designated No Mow Zone meadow at Robin Hill ParkRe-developing Robin Hill Park Fairy Garden with natural and native materialsWith EAC – hosted bi-annual Recycling EventIdentified, established and provided interpretive signage for no mow and wetland zones, pond life and restoration of riparian buffers along bodies of waterInstalled – Olson Parks riparian buffer projectDeveloped Plan for Olson Park streambank stabilization projectComplied with MS4 – storm water management resolution improving storm water pondsIntegrated – Green programming in summer camps and children & youth programsHost annual Earth Day event for over 1,000 residents focusing on environmental educational activities. In 2020 Earth Day Express.Host annual T-shirt design contest to engage Moon School students in environmental awareness. activity.Improve and Design sustainable trail systems in all parks connecting to neighborhoods for improved accessibility:Added and improved nearly 20 miles or park and connector trails, all signed and mappedEngaged local neighborhood groups to volunteer to develop and maintain connector trails at Olson Park – Cimarron, Shady Glen, Bon Meade, Parkridge Village and Londonberry.Promote Christmas tree collection, branch and mulch collection programResearched and considering development of Flaugherty Run inter-municipality entity.Held trail development seminar and training for public works staff – semi annuallyCommunicate Sustainability initiatives, progress and programs and engage community via, e-newsletters, social media and designated pages on Moon Township website and Moon Messenger quarterly magazine.Continue to host the Community Supported Agriculture produce for residents (CSA) in Municipal BuildingDeveloped an HOA/neighborhood Forum to discuss projects and goals including sustainability projects such a storm water management.Developed a new resident Guide and include sustainability/green initiatives and contacts for residentsPublic works program established for– mulch chipping and pick up program for residentsZoning compliance program for blight and also sign ordinance complianceDeveloped ordinance to add chickens Partner with Volunteers and Eagle scouts for environmental projects such as Chimney Swift Towers with Audubon society (2 thus far) in Olson and Robin Hill Parks.Moon Park Nelson Pond Improvements with Riparian Buffer, Erosion control and Floating Plant Islands (2)Engaged large group Corporate and Organizational Volunteer Groups for Tree plantings, Pond Clean up, Trail Building and Environmental Projects – ongoing 30+ groups such as Comcast Cares Day, Pittsburgh Cares, Columbia SportsWear and Dick’s Sporting Goods Annual Volunteer Days, Amrock, Ampco and Chevron Trail Sponsorships. ................
