Farquhar’s gallant attempt to blow up the bridge illustrates his patriotic, yet hubristic attitude which ultimately leads to his downfall. Fitzgerald believes that when one values too much on one dream, it becomes a nightmare. The social element in the Occurrence of Owl Creek Bridge shows the true cruelty of war as his old fellow countrymen take Farquhar’s life by hanging him.
