The Equinox

The oldest meaning of the word "equinox" is the day when daytime and night are of approximately equal duration.[3] The word equinox comes from this definition, derived from the Latin aequinoctium, aequus (equal) and nox (genitive noctis) (night.

On the day of an equinox, the geometric center of the Sun's disk crosses the equator, and this point is above the horizon for 12 hours everywhere on the Earth. Day and night are not exactly of equal length they vary by minutes at the time of the March 20-22 and September 20-22 equinoxes, in most instances

The moment when the equinox occurs is the moment when the sun's center is exactly above the Earth's equator. On the day the equinox occurs, the sun spends almost exactly half of the 24-hour period above the planet's horizon and the other 12 hours below the earth's horizon. Rather than being an entire day, the equinox actually occurs at an exact moment.

Observances

Many cultures celebrate the beginning of a new year on the day of one of the annual equinoxes. The Jewish Passover and the Christian observance of Easter are calculated according to the date of the equinox. Several other religious observances and cultural festivals are marked by these occasions

The Bible says:

Genesis 1:14-17 KJV

[14] And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from

the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: [15] And let

them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.

[16] And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to

rule the night: he made the stars also. [17] And God set them in the firmament of the heaven

to give light upon the earth
