Deleting Temporary Internet Files and Cookies

Protecting Government Information When Using Non-Government Computers

When you check your Government email using the internet-based Outlook Web Access or ¡°OWA¡±,

anything that you view or open may be ¡°cached¡± (i.e. stored) on the computer you are using during the

OWA session. In some instances, the computer you are using may be a personal or ¡°public¡± computer

and not a Government of Newfoundland and Labrador computer asset (e.g. home computers, kiosks,

airports, hotel business centers, etc¡). When you are using public computers to check your Government

email, you should ensure, wherever possible, that traces of the information you are viewing and/or

opening are removed from that computer after your session

In order to protect any confidential or sensitive Government information that could be in your emails and

reduce the risk of inappropriate or unauthorized access to that information, you should, wherever

possible, remove temporary Internet files as well as ¡°cookies¡± when accessing OWA on non-government

computers (e.g., personal computers, public computers or kiosks, etc¡).

This document will outline several easy steps that every employee should follow to protect Government

information after checking email with OWA on a non-government computer.

OWA should only be used to open or view information. While you may use OWA to view and open email

attachments, best practice is to not download or save to a non-Government computer.

Note: While some public computers may not allow you to delete these files, you should be deleting them

on a regular basis if you are using a personal or home computer to check your mail with OWA.
