The Deloitte Data Scientist at the Schulich School of Business,York University(Term position)Background:In recognition of the critical importance of the rapidly changing business intelligence landscape and quantum leaps forward in data collection and analytics, as well as machine learning and artificial intelligence, the Schulich School of Business, York University, invites applications for a resident Data Scientist, named in honour of Deloitte LLP, starting on July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2021. The Schulich School of Business launched its Masters of Business Analytics (‘MBAN’) program in 2012, the first of its kind in Canada and one of a select few in the world. Now into its 6th year of operation, the Program stands among Schulich’s most successful and is globally recognized. As the next step in its evolution, the Program has formed the foundation of a future Centre in Business Analytics, a hotbed of industry outreach, industry and academia collaboration, research and practical teaching in business analytics. This Centre will also be home to the new Deloitte Cognitive Analytics & Visualization Lab. The Deloitte Data Scientist position will support the future Centre’s development Lab and expand Schulich’s research and teaching footprint in the area of data‐driven decision making. The creation of the Deloitte Data Scientist position under the MBAN Program not only recognizes the pervasiveness and global importance of big data to a variety of sectors; it will also make it possible to recruit more graduate students and for Schulich to expand into new program areas. Qualifications:The successful applicant should have a Doctoral degree either in statistics, economics, operations research, management science, computer science, or a related area. Expertise in machine learning, statistics, and big data applications are required. He/she will have a record of recognized research and visibility; a significant and sustained record of scholarly publications in high-level peer-reviewed journals; a strong capacity for both independent and collaborative research; and proven motivation and pedagogic abilities at the undergraduate and graduate levels.Key Responsibilities:The Deloitte Data Scientist is a research intensive position with a focus on applied approach, developing solutions to industry challenges. Reporting to the Program Director of the Master of Business Analytics, this individual will help support the achievement of the Program’s research vision, and assist in fostering the development of the culture of research within the Program and future Centre. Duties will include but are not limited to:Providing advice on the strategic development of the Deloitte Cognitive Analytics & Visualization Lab.Teaching 4 courses per year within the MBAN and the future related programs.Developing new courses for the MBAN and the future related programs.Overseeing the Lab in collaboration with other MBAN Program staff.Bridging the gap between MBAN faculty, students, and staff and external stakeholders.Teaching classes in support of the MBAN Program and as directed by the MBAN Program Director. Mentoring MBAN students with research projects, specifically as they relate to MBAN 6090.Leading the development of a business analytics research policy that bridges the needs of internal researchers and external stakeholders. Providing suggestions and recommendations to the MBAN Advisory Committee that will help deliver increasing value to stakeholder outreach and improved efficiency vis-à-visthe Deloitte Cognitive Analytics & Visualization Lab.Collaborating regularly with relevant internal teams (i.e., Development & Alumni Relations, Dean’s Office, Marketing & Communications, Career Development Centre and Student Services & International Relations) to foster alignment and a dialogue of feedback and continuous improvement. Developing and encouraging knowledge creation and mobilization, as follows:The creation of thought leadership that can be disseminated to both the academic community and industry.Assuming research projects management, as required and directed. Demonstrating leadership and collaborating with other research groups and faculties at York University and other universities and industries, and developing strategic external research partnerships, where appropriate and within the scope and mandate of the MBAN Program and the Deloitte Cognitive Analytics and Visualization Lab.Assisting in the development of funding proposals for the future Centre and associate-level sponsorships/partnerships for the Deloitte Cognitive Analytics and Visualization Lab.Working with the MBAN Program Director and Schulich Research Office, access tri-council funding through your own applications and in collaboration with other research groups/organizations locally, nationally and internationally. Ensure and manage a QA process integrated for all deliverables and events/courses/workshops associated with the Deloitte Cognitive Analytics & Visualization Lab.Developing manuscripts/white papers/research reports and publishing in top-tier journals, newsletters and other publications; participating in conference presentations, showcasing the Deloitte Cognitive Analytics and Visualization Lab’s excellent research-work, and engaging in other forms of knowledge mobilization.Where available, you will be a guest speaker at a Deloitte University leadership development seminar, on a mutually agreed upon topic, and with approval of the MBAN Program Director. Furthermore, you will be a guest speaker at select Deloitte sponsored events such as Deloitte's Analytics Summit, or other events, on a mutually agreed upon topic and date. Where available, and approved by the MBAN Program Director, you will also be invited to participate in an annual co-branded round table and annual co-branded thought leadership piece (whitepaper/case study, to be determined based on Schulich/Deloitte mutual research priorities). An integral part of the leadership team of MBAN Program, this position is expected to be complementary and mutually supportive of the current team and together will encompass the range of activities as described, in addition to other duties as assigned. Specific duties will be commensurate with the experience and interests of the successful candidate and based on the individual strengths which they bring to the portfolio.
